    January Brew and Swap

I think I've been under pitching all my higher gravity beers without realising. I've always used Brewfather to input recipies, but until someone mentioned (I think Tess Tickle) that this also tells you how much yeast is needed, I've always just guessed! Looking back on my Rye recipe, brewfather...

    Using Water Butts

I planned to get a pump and set up using my water butt, but never got around to it. I use an old container instead as a header tank and fill that using a watering can. Works perfectly as well. Planning to brew tomorrow and will take a pic of the setup if I remember. Great way to save water👍

Hi mate, so.....after looking at recipies and deciding I may need some Fuggles, realised I don't actually need any for the Victory Ale 🤦. Just playing with the recipe from my book. Do you have your full recipe you used? Thinking of going for this one tomorrow. At the moment brewfather tells me...

Yes, I've so far not had a bad one from his book. Have done TT Landlord and Big Lamp bitter as AG brews. Years ago I also made Brakespear bitter and Boddies using his extract recipies, also very nice brews. Having checked my stock, turns out I'm out of Fuggles so will have to pick another brew...

Hi, how did this one turn out? Just browsing the Wheeler book for a possible next brew and remembered this was on my list. 👍

Bottled my Rye brew this evening. After worrying about it having a slightly high FG, it was 1.013 (1.011 aim). I reduced priming sugar slightly to ensure no gushers, but think it will be fine. Bit like Hazelwood's initial taste. Nice touch of tropical fruits coming through. Can't pick out the...

👍. Did you give it a stir to get it going again?

Very useful info, especially about the esters. Bit of a 💡💡 moment as my stronger beers have had some characteristics which are probably linked to stressed yeast. Never considered that before. Will definitely be upping my yeast from now on 👍👍

That would be really useful. When I got back into this, reading around gave me tye impression that over pitching could cause issues, thus I tend to err on the safer side. I figured a pk for a 23l batch, thus half pk (towards 3/4) for my smaller brews. But maybe a full pk for 12l brews won't...

Interesting....I wonder if I should have used a full packet rather than 1/2-3/4 I did use. Will chuck in the rest tonight 👍

Ok, so couldn't resist checking progress!! It's around 1.016, very murky (taken from bottom tap with sediment) has a lovely aroma (not sure what) but tastes a little harsh, yet nice. Have upped the temp and will consider dry hopping tomorrow. 👍

Brewfather predicts 1.011 with this yeast. I'm probably over concerned, and normally I'd not worry....only thinking about this one because of my last batch which is more like champagne 🤣. Not checked the gravity as I try not to disturb the beer. Temp is set to 19.5 so upping it to 21 is good...

I've used US05 and it has flatlined at 1.019 from 1.062 after 4 days. Taking into account disturbance on the ispindle (usually 3 pts), this has finished higher than expected. Normally I wouldn't be too concerned, but my last brew finished higher than expected and I now have a batch of gushers...

Brewed my Rye IPA today as well. As doing full volume BIAB I didn't worry about a stuck mash, so left rice hulls out of this. Apart from the weather, all went well. Infact I seem to be a couple of points over my SG target fir once! Just cleaned my boiler and found some scorching on the bottom...

    Solar pump power source

I like that idea. Will have to have a quick hunt around to see if I have anything suitable I could try.

    Solar pump power source

Excellent, thanks for that. I've also been looking at other ideas as found reference to these VCE DC Power Connector Male Female 5 Pairs 5.5mm x 2.1mm 12V Power Jack Plug for CCTV Camera: Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools May get a cheap one from ebay to see if they work with the Multiplug adaptor. Solar pump power source

Hi all, I got a solar pump 12v a while ago to rig up a recirculation system. I've been looking at getting this powered and thought I could use a 12v multiplug adaptor. Having dug this out the connectors don't actually fit!! So, anyone any idea if a 12v 7aH battery would power this, or another...

Hi, it was from Murphy & Sons in Nottingham (Supplies For Professional Brewers & Winemakers | Murphy & Son). First time I've used them, great service and price. They think their prices will increase at the end of the month. If you are not around here there are a few group buys that take place...
