    Keeping bottles warm

Hi there, If you have a thermometer beside the bottles it will give you a guide to whether things are well away from your desired priming temperature or not. For example I do it in a cupboard where my boiler is and it varies from 15 to 22 degrees Celcius on the whole. Yeast have "Ideal"...

letting the fizz out of the bottles

Yes the 2 wks at fermentation temps. give the carbonation. When you fill the bottles make sure there is at least 2 inches of headspace from the top of the beer to the top of the bottle, this will allow any gas to pressurise the bottle, this will reduce the risk of explosions if you were to over...

    Mash problem?

I do a similar method with a tea urn, and my last 2-3 brews have given 71-74% efficiency. Is this anywhere near your results ? Yes I would defiately like to improve , and have on occasion hit around 82% efficiency , but have hit a bit of a brick wall in this quest ! It could be the case that...

    Challenger SMaSH

Yes Target seems a good proposition, I really want "Traditional / English" notes, but have been looking to get other people's experience of the results - many thanks Hopsteep.

letting the fizz out of the bottles

Hi Lazylizard, the note on removing the beer from the yeast cells (trub) in the bottom of your primary fermenter is as you say fairly logical (if there is such a thing in beer making !!) simply by removing the relatively clear beer into another clean vessel allows you then to bottle something...

    Challenger SMaSH

Yes : I love challenger , it is superb. you will not be disapointed. Four of my recent brews have had 50% Challenger, and 50% EKG and have been exceptional in delivering that "English bitter style. I am personally wanting to try something else which gives "English" notes but but am open to...

letting the fizz out of the bottles

Hi Harry, if your kit says 85 grammes for 40 pints , the instructions pretty much are assuming that you will get roughly 40 pints (easier to say in litres 22.7 l) which for my calculations for a beer around 20 degrees celcius would give you the right amount of gas for something like an English...

1 year of brewing - what worked, what didn't

Well done ! A thoughtful and insightful posting. Yes we all should listen and learn and improve as we go.... All the best, David.

letting the fizz out of the bottles

With Bottling, after your kit is finished fermenting and you think that your beer is ready to bottle (no gas being produced and / or a couple of hydrometer readings which are similar......i.e. 1.010, or below for something like a pale ale, etc..your kit may tell you what to expect ?). Then...

    Hydrometer vs Refractometer

When I started all grain brewing I bought a cheap one from Fleabay, and wanted it for post fermentation duties - but realised pretty quickly that the result was nothing like the hydrometer.... It now lives in the cupboard where all my irrational and useless purchases from the internet reside....!!!

    Bottling too cold??

They will be fine... The yeast in your brew will start working as it comes up to your normal primary fermentation temperature. Just leave the bottles for the correct time at that temperature (I use 18-20 deg Celcius mainly) and all will be as nature intended !

    What causes all this trub

Being a relitive newbie to all grain I have thought about what gives you more or less trub.... Your picture looks very similar to what I get with BIAB. So, for me when I got it, I put it down to fine material not filtered out from the kettle from your malt & hops.

    Water Treatment - Gypsum

Yes Fleabay is the route for me.... Put in "Food grade......" whatever you need...... and hay-presto ! All you need then is the magic of paypal !

Total Newbie - Looking at equipment

I use a Burco tea urn and use a boil in the bag method, but like Rodcx500z says the Klarstein is a fine piece of kit, and I wish I had opted for it initially. With my "Tea urn" option you need a couple of plastic 25l buckets to help things along, but apart from that there is not much outlay...
