1st brew update, 2nd brew started....

I've just checked my first brew (Better Brew Export Lager) which I managed to dilute a little too much by not including the wort and sugar solution volumes in the 23 litre total so it started with a relatively low OG of 1.031. 7 days on at around 19'C and it's now at 1.005 which I think makes it...

How much priming sugar should I use for 330ml Bottles?

1 potential issue, a US gallon is 3.79 litres, not 4.54 litres as in the UK. I assume the site is in US gallons...? Chris

    Bottling setup and questions....

No tap here: http://www.wilkinsonplus.com/home-brewi ... t/0075885/ It's only £13 and if I'm going down the little bottler route, I don't need the tap anyway. The primary FV is already on a worktop in my utility room so my only movement will be the bottling bin to the worktop after...

    Bottling setup and questions....

Thanks. I'm planning to be super careful not to disturb the sediment when syphoning so hopefully it'll be pretty clear into the bottles. I had originally though the main benefit of using a bottling bin would ease of use with a little bottler. Batch priming and reducing the risk of primary...

    Bottling setup and questions....

My first brew is now a week old and looking good so I need to decide on my bottling setup. I'm using a standard 25 litre fermenting bin to brew but I plan on siphoning that off to a dedicated bottling bin as soon as I get 2 days with the same SG. I've found a cost effective setup as follows...

    Little Bottler and conditioning questions....

Thanks for the replies. Re batch priming in the bottling bucket, isn't it a faff to measure the total volume to calculate the amount of priming sugar required compared to knowing the volume of each bottle much more accurately? What happens if the sugar doesn't fully dissolve in the bottling...

    Little Bottler and conditioning questions....

In anticipation of my first brew completing its initial fermentation in a week or so, I'm now considering the issue of bottling and would appreciate some advice. My brews will likely be export lager/pilsner kits (I'm trying the Better Brew kits to start with) and I'll be bottling into 2L fizzy...

    how much do you drink?

The recommended amount is 2 to 3 litres of fluids per day isn't it....??

First brew for nearly 20 years is on!

Worst case Mason, you end up with a keg of warm, flat, weak beer, but then Mild is quite popular up your neck of the woods isn't it....?! ;-) Chris

First brew for nearly 20 years is on!

I'm already looking at fridges on eBay!! I've decided to go for bottle only at this stage, it seems most people using kegs with lager have pressure problems. I've got a bunch of old 2L coke bottles that I currently use for watering the reps that may end up being repurposed unless I can get...

First brew for nearly 20 years is on!

The yeast it comes with is labelled "Beer Yeast Export Lager 10g". The yeast with the Czech Pilsner kit is labelled "Beer Yeast Czech Pilsner 10g" so I'm guessing each kit comes with a kit specific yeast, otherwise why label them as such? The kit pouch itself seems to be generic with a kit...

First brew for nearly 20 years is on!

Just put my first brew on after a big parcel arrived by courier this morning! It's a Better Brew Export Lager and it looks and smells good so far, however my FV location is only 18.5'C and the instructions specify 20'C - 25'C. I used the yeast provided so I assume that needs the higher temps...

    Brewferm, Diablo

Reward comes to he who waits as they say?! I'm starting my first brews for 20 years myself when everything arrives next week (forgot to take into account the bank holiday...!) so it's good to hear patience bears benefits. BTW, your comment about Heineken tasting watery made me smile, I'm not...

    So what have I missed....??

Thanks. I've been monitoring my fermentation location and it's consistently been between 17.8'C and 18.6'C over the last 48 hours measured 5 or 6 times during the day. Bearing in mind I'm going to be brewing a pilsner/export lager, I assume this will be OK? Chris

    So what have I missed....??

Thanks for that. Just out of interest, apart from varying the fermentation rate is there any other impact fermentation temperature (or conditioning for that matter) has on the end product? Chris

    So what have I missed....??

Good call but I was planning on using the sterilised hydrometer in the FV on brew day and once it stops bubbling to check the OG change? Siphoning/bottling is on my list to review based on experience and I've got plenty of thermometers already. I forgot to add deionised water for the Star San...

Thought I'd got it sussed.....?? Plenty of food for thought so thanks for the prompt inputs! Chris

Sterilising equipment prior to brewing and yeast

Bottle prime as I understand that's best for lager to get it to a decent pressure and 2L in one go....? I'm not convinced that'll be a major problem...!!

Sterilising equipment prior to brewing and yeast

Quick question on Star San, how much do you use per 40 pint brew with 12 x 2L plastic bottles? Just trying to figure out what size to buy.... Thanks Chris PS - Just found a thread on dilution of Star San. It looks like it works best with deionised water at 1.5ml per litre? Would it work OK in...
