    HERMS design and PID Controllers

Aleman, I have just ordered a 1512, basic pt100 from auber and a 25A ssr from them. Would you be looking at possibly getting rid of your shelved PID?? Cheers

    HERMS design and PID Controllers

I've been mulling over controllers for many days now and have come no closer to actually deciding what to get. I'm itching to get going yet all the choices seem to involve ridiculous delivery times from US or China. Auber is looking the most promising and quality of the lot so far and on the...

    Pigtail Heating Elements

I have seen people wiring them in series, so each element gets 110/120V, and hence half the 3kW max. That'd only total 3kW still but might be better from a watt density point of view - less chance of scorching the wort. The only downside to that plan is that 2 25quid elements is rather more...

    Straining grain beer

Maybe you need to look at your sparging technique and maybe a manifold redesign? There shouldn't really be any grain particles by the fermenting stage as they should all be filtered out in the sparging stage or by the hop bed in the boiler. Have you tried any finings? Not sure they'd work in...

    Boiler Questions

Hello! I built a very effective boiler using a 33L plastic FV and a pair of cheapy ASDA elements. Brought 24/25L to the boil in 30mins or so. The alternative to this, slightly safer too, is to locate a stainless keg or stockpot (from ebay) and install the value elements or some pigtail...

    Look what I just bought....

I am in the lucky position of being a student at the moment going into 2nd year at Uni. Living in a house with 3 other students - I can't see why they would have a problem with me setting this up  The eventual aim is to buy 2 cornies and start brewing 2 cornies worth at a time, and...

    Look what I just bought....

Even came with a check valve as well, which I understand is used for dispensing from Cornies etc. And all of this for the princely sum of £22.50 Good deal?!

    Mash Tun advice

Maybe I should have mentioned that I have quite a few of the bits needed already! I have roughly 5m of 8mm copper, a suitable bucket for the heat exchanger and enough plumbing fittings to sink a ship. Oh, and a pump (that might or might not be capable of the job - as of yet untested). Now left...

    Mash Tun advice

Hello all, Have recently acquired a few 11G stainless kegs and have been busy converting one into a boiler. Now that's done I still haven't satisfied the DIY urge and want to a bigger mashtun. I have another available keg and was wondering if its worth the effort of converting that, insulating...

    steam extraction

There was a discussion a while back about using a garden bin incinerator lid (the ones with the hole in the middle) attached to some ducting. It was concluded IIRC that just some ducting would be the more sensible option from the hygienic point of view. If you could find a shower room extractor...

    Is this pump any good?

The pump is pretty quick. Well good enough for brewing uses anyway! Just another quick question... The water chiller this pump comes from has a 10-15 litre tank with an integrated cooling coil around the bottom 3rd of the tank. I have tested this and the coil with no water in the tank frosts up...

    Is this pump any good?

Just the answer I wanted to hear! I shall have to run some fairly aggressive oxy through this as its got a fair amount of scale/crud on it. Will post back with the results of my experiments. Cheers Unc!

    Is this pump any good?

I have just acquired an old water chiller/carbonator from work. It has a large tank which I presume was filled with water. A compressor sits underneath and has a coil at the bottom of this tank which presumably is meant to cool the tank of water. Above this cooling coil is a larger coil through...

A new tap for my boiler maybe....?

What pains me more than anything is seeing 8 tonnes of fridges and freezers coming in to the yard and being tipped out and then crushed.. All the temperature controlled fermentation chambers they could make... Painful! On a more positive note - lots of brass fittings undamaged = very useful!

A new tap for my boiler maybe....?

Oh I love my job! I get to come across all sorts of fun things... Just waiting for the day that I can have a tap of this bore on any of my brewing vessels... Also came across, although didn't get a photo, a very nice water chiller/carbonation box. It has a stainless steel coil, square, about...

    Southwold Ale Yeast

http://themaltmiller.co.uk/index.php?_a ... t&catId=18 - 4th one down, although quite expensive at £2.10 for 500g. Not sure about the yeast - that'd be someone else's call but i'm sure any decent yeast would make a very quaffable beer. Good luck!

    DIY Stir Plate

Hello all, Have just been reading up on the howto stir plate post in the How To section. In that guide the magnets were circular.... I have just taken apart a hard drive to locate some magnets but they appear, although very strong, to have wierd poles. The ends are one pole and the middle...

    Southwold Ale Yeast

I'm getting quite excited reading up on yeast slants now. We have a beer festival in the summer with 60+ cask conditioned beers - lots of yeast for me to harvest!! The only thing is going to be keeping the extracted trub organised and sterile. Many thanks for the reply Aleman, some test tubes...

    Southwold Ale Yeast

I have been reading about the Southwold ale yeast only being one of the strains of the Adnams bitter yeasts. I work in a pub that turns over 8 or 9 firkins of adnams a week so would have no problem in acquiring the trub in the bottom of the firkins. Is this a viable way of acquiring yeast for a...
