    Temperature and brew activity

Just wondering if the lack of yeast nutrients in the kit might interfere with the lager yeast function. It's a long shot. Probably not worth going down that route this time. I think Young's Lager yeast might just prefer it warmer. Warm it up and take what you can get. You can always order...

    Screw plastic bottle tops

When I bottled my brews I would fill the bath full enough to be able to completely fill and submerge 22 2litre PET bottles in hot water. Adding a suitable amount of sanitizer of course. I would leave them to soak for the 5-10 minutes recommended (by the santizer label) then drain the bath and...

    Temperature and brew activity

I think it really depends on the yeast and I couldn't find a reference to the temp range for Young's lager yeast, so I didn't use them. The Brewferm yeast I used said, "Ferment temp: 12-15C" My fridge is set to "temp_rounded_down >11 <14" at the moment. I'm two weeks fermenting tomorrow and...

CO2 Observation - not wasting it.

Yea, I'm in Northern Ireland, there are a few gas suppliers, not all will deal with the public, some are in "areas you see on the news" and dodgy as hell. BOC told me they would not deliver to a residential address as their insurance would not cover "leaks in a confined space". I argued with...

The most basic thing I could come up with

Currently fermenting away. It looks vile as the break material has all floated to the top leaving none at the bottom, literally an inch of grey brown break glop at the top. I'm sure it will fall out to the bottom when the CO2 dies away as ferment finishes.... I hope.

CO2 Observation - not wasting it.

The trouble is, the leak will be very, very small if it's still there at all. What I did find was that if I leave the gas line unconnected, the reg shut and at 30PSI it will fall to 20PSI in about 10-15 minutes and if left for a few days drop to 10PSI. Last time I did this was quite some time...

    2nd attempt at a lager.

    Cool thanks :)

CO2 Observation - not wasting it.

So I'm about 12 brews and 6 months into using a keg and CO2. I started with a 5.5Kg pub cylinder. Originally I trusted my calor gas pipe, jubilee clipped nicely to the barbed tails. So when I up the keg to 30PSI for 2 days I left the gas on. Then when I dropped it to serving pressure I left...

    2nd attempt at a lager.

Well closing in on 2 weeks at 12C and I have a little dilemma. The two demi's started to ferment at different times and different speeds. One has started to clear with just yeast chunks floating and I believe it needs racked to secondary. The other still has a few mm of foam, is cloudy and...

    Looking for inspiration.

So my progression in brewing in short is: Kits + sugar. Kits + malt extract. Kits + steeped crystal + malt extract. Kits + steeped crystal + malt extract + hops Kits + steeped crystal and base malt + hops. Mashed grains + malt extract + hops. A small AG lager (still in the FVs) A very small AG...

The most basic thing I could come up with

I brewed a batch on Saturday which is the pinnacle of simple. 5 L batch 1Kg Marris Otter 7.5g EKG 1g protofloc 2g Nottingham Ale Yeast Granted I'll probably only get 4 1 litre bottles from it, but I just wanted to see if a 1 gallon batch would work. I only have 4 litres in it to stop it over...

    Temperature and brew activity

I have no trouble carrying the plastic demi's around, just don't grab the thing, use a handle around the neck or lift it by the neck. Regards your lager and temp. Keep a careful eye on it. If it IS lager yeast, while it might take a while at 15-16C for it to get started once it does it will...

    Temperature and brew activity

2 x 5 litre (1 imperial gallon (ish)), clear plastic, PET. On ebay for a few quid each, go to a fiver and they come with airlocks and temp strips. viewtopic.php?f=36&t=50165 Small batches work fine apparently. I can just about make a 10 litre (about 9 actually) all grain brew with a 12 litre...

    Temperature and brew activity

Oh and once you do get it running, try wrapping it in a blanket (in the garage). The heat produced by the yeast may then help you keep it up a few degrees towards 12C.

    Temperature and brew activity

I started a lager last week. The yeast (Brewferm) said "12-15C" for the ferment temp. I started off in the fridge, but when that turned out to be 8*C and after 2-3 days there was zero activity I removed it from the fridge and allowed it to warm to 16C, then back into the fridge and kept it at...

    Sensor positioning

As I am using a hardware chip temp sensor I found some of these things can be programatically removed by using a sliding average temp window which removes spikes and fluctuations. That said, as I have wiring troubles with making the sensor remote to the breadboard, when I put it in the fridge...

    Raspberry PI fridge

I've been using the sensor for ages on the breadboard and the only time it errors is when you touch it with your finger. I had it logging temp in my house every 5 minutes for a month without fault previously. Helped me optimize the heating timer settings :) As soon as I put it onto the end of...

Switching from aerobic to anaerobic fermentation.

I'm fairly sure the number of yeast cells you end up with during the full on ferment is many orders of magnitude larger than the number you originally pitch.

    Raspberry PI fridge

Not sure how that would work, it's not an analogue sensor it's an I2C/SMBus thing. I think the data from it is digital. Not sure though. The other possibility is that I am using cheap chinese servo wire which probably only has a few strands of actual conductor, although, they do work with...

    Raspberry PI fridge

So my fridges warmest setting is about 8C, no good for fermenting a lager. I already had a Raspberry PI, breadboard, temp probe and relay lying around, just not put together and so I put together a small prototype. I really do have to tidy up the mains hack! It's properly soldered and...
