    Covid - Plan B & Omicron

Keeping windows open and reducing temperature is likely to increase the incidents of head and chest colds. Just the sort of thing you want to help fight off a respiratory illness. Also I think we should introduce the mandatory wearing of insulating hats when outdoors or in public places*. I...

Scrapping HS2 Leeds extension 'undermines' levelling up

Err - there lies the problem! It's like being a turkey given the choice of a traditional Xmas in the UK or Thanksgiving in the US . And has anyone told the pig in the M&S advert they also do a nice ham for Xmas ?

If you could only drink one commercial beer for the rest of your life.......

Pedigree was the best - and what most locals drank by choice - but did not travel (max15 miles and you could taste the difference). Draught Bass a close second - especially direct from a barrel. Ind Coope pubs had the comfiest seating! It was rumoured at the time that other beers were...

    COP26

COP26 when hundreds of "important" people fly in from all over the world to tell "ordinary" people (i.e. everyone else) they need to not fly anymore. Have these people never heard of Zoom / Teams etc

    Adding coffee (how much?)

Consider adding coffee after the boil as the wort cools. You will get different flavours from (good coffee) at different temperatures. Generally don't boil the coffee as burnt coffee -like burnt toast - all tastes the same

    Angela Rayner on the Tories

Re Labour - I'm 57 tomorrow - In my adult lifetime only 1 Labour politician - Tony Blair - has won an election - and today Labour would not elect him !?!. In all that time they have never had another leader (with the possible exception of the late John Smith) with the requisite mix of personal...

Should you trust your digital scales?

My science teacher got kicked out of a pub at our sixth form leaving do for hitting the landlord with a sausage roll. He proudly put his accuracy down to his detailed knowledge of scientific principles, though how believable this was given that the incident arose due to him missing the darts...

Strictly speaking the OG was 1995 - but that was the © date not a scale reading!😁

    Cyclists.

As a regular cyclist I try to avoid major roads with heavy traffic. If I had children on a tagalong I would do the same. There is little enjoyment in being buffeted by traffic happens even with the most considerate of drivers and a tag along tandem who is more vulnerable to crosswinds than other...

    No covid jab

With regards to the argument that you might catch or pass covid after a vaccine. However remember you might still get hit by the proverbial bus even if you look both ways before crossing the road - but that is no reason to stop looking. Also re the above post - has anyone got the recipe for...

    Which Vaccine? [poll]

Had the AZ - felt medium+ grotty for a couple of days - not dissimilar to having :a bit of a bug' that many of us "suffer" from every year. Overall though as a trade of for avoiding a virus that will kill millions worldwide not a bad deal (deliberate understatement). My advice - have the job...

Uses for Spent Grain, Hope and Other Ingredients?

I am interested to hear what innovative ideas members have for reusing / recycling Spent Grain , hope or other ingredients ? Thus far we have added small amounts of grain to home-made bread or in the base for flapjacks, and used it as fertilizer on the garden. It seems such a waste to just...

    Hello to all from Chester

Like many new members I suspect my return to home brewing (after a break of 35+ years) was in part due to the extra time on my hands over the last year - combined with the enthusiastic encouragement of existing member - and my eldest son - Alefric. Starting with a small, but excellent (if...
