Yes, completely from scrap yard parts. The pots are old 113L pool filter housings, the stand was an old piece of machinery I stripped down and all of the switches/relays ect.. were picked up at surplus shops.

I made mine out of copper with a float switch mounted to it to turn on/off the sparge water.

If you have an immersion chiller you can double it up as a HERMS by dropping it into your hot liquor tank and recirculating your wort through it. You just need to raise your water a few degrees higher then your target temperature.

I had the same problem with sticking until I switched to 12VDC, It's been running 4 years without a problem. My pump is 120v so I have to switch it with a solid state relay. They say they are rated for high voltage but it eventually kills them.

Another inexpensive option is SS braid off of water supply lines. Toilet supply lines and washer supply lines have stainless braid over them, just push the tubing out and used the braid as a false bottom. I've been using this one for 6 years now and I get 80%+ efficiency with no stuck sparges.

I have found the electronic float switches work the best, you can find them cheap on ebay. I use a low voltage power supply to activate a relay to turn on my pump....
