    Hop Harvest - First Year

They look great! Have you dried them yet and if so what weights did you get when dry?

    pressure barrel question

Thanks for the detailed response Dizzle. I'm sure I'll get round to buying the other bits at some time.

    pressure barrel question

Not meaning to hijack this (old) thread but I need some help. I've got a party coming up at the end of Feb and have a Wherry nearing the end of initial fermentation. I've just been into Wilko and bought a pressure barrel with the idea of holding the Wherry beer for the party. I've not bought...

White wine from white grape juice, best results?

Regarding oak chips, where do you all get them from? And how much do you use and when? Thanks, Matt

FV still smells of ginger beer!

Thanks both. I haven't got any vwp (yet) but I'm sure I've got some bicarb of soda lurking about. I'll try that. Cheers, Matt

FV still smells of ginger beer!

Hi all, I have made two gallons of ginger beer. It sat in one of my plastic 25L fermenting buckets for a week before I moved it into demijohns. I've given the FV a good clean and scrub but it still smells of ginger. What's the best way of getting rid of the taint? Full it up with water and add...

    Wine bottling worries

Hi Boozy Shoes I too use Wilko CT and stabiliser and occasionally have also noticed tiny white dust like particles floating about after adding them. Not sure if it's from the tables or the stabiliser though! However, I just forget about it and put the bottles away. Not noticed any of the bits...

    The Campden Tablet

Hi Callum, Really interesting and useful post. I think you need to re-do the gallons edit though. 10 gals for 46L ;) . So to dechlorinate a 5gal/23L FV of water prior to putting a brew on, 1 tablet will do the lot ok? Cheers, Matt

I won at my local village show this past Saturday with wine

Congratulations Ken! Were these award winning wines from recipes or kits? You're going to need a trophy cabinet now ... Matt

    Hops in my garden

Thanks Duxuk. I'm only thinking of adding them dry to a kit - nothing very adverturous. I've picked what was there - they came in at 100g wet weight. People say dry weight is 1/5 of wet, so that's a massive 20g!! Maybe I'll just dump them rather than risk ruining a 23L batch.

    Hops in my garden

Thanks for that BigJim - very interesting. I'll pick them and air dry them and see what happens. I've got nothing to lose. [edited typo]

    Hops in my garden

Thanks for the replies. I've been thinking that they've almost certainly come from a garden centre (the previous owners spent a fortune at garden centres). We have a Blooms around here and after a quick search on their website they only stock one type of hop - Humulus lupinus 'Golden Tassels'...

    Hops in my garden

Hi all, Since we moved into our house there have been a few hops growing in the garden but I've never really cared for them. However, since starting this homebrewing lark I'm seeing them in a different light. My problem is I have no idea as to what type of hops they are and from reading other...

Help me out with a quick survey?

Done. Just one question - would the cost cover the tent hire and the pitch at the campsite?

    fizzy wine,campden tabs and finings

I used finings to clear my elderflower champagne before batch priming and bottling. I tested a bottle after two weeks and it was flat as a pancake so I believe that the finings completely took out my yeast. I've added a tiny pinch of white wine yeast to each bottle now (they were all...

Have finings cleared too much yeast?

It's been two weeks since I bottled my elderflower champagne so today I thought I'd have a look at how much sediment had formed at the bottom of the bottles. I found a clear one and had a look - nothing. Not a sign of any sediment. Can't be good I thought. So I put it in the fridge for a couple...

    FreeCycle is the Biz

Yeah, freecycle's great. I got my first 5 DJs from there. Since then I've picked up 4 DJs and a 25L FV from the charity shop attached to our local tip. DJs are £1 each, the FV was £2. I thought I had enough, but now think I could do with another FV so I can get two big brews on at the same...

    Wilco deal on Muntons

I just started the Shiraz last night - I bought it in the Wilko sale a few months ago. I may add some yeast nutrient to it tonight then. I've done it to the 23 litres as per instructions. Should I have done it a few litres short like people recommend with beer kits? I've got a Sauvignon Blanc...

    Calling all prunes!!!

Oh. I just bought a litre of 100% prune juice to make a wow style wine. I went on the basis of them being derived from plums and I thought plum wine was nice. Has anyone had good results using prune juice?

    looking for help bottling wine

After reading about it on here I bought a bottling wand. It's made by Youngs and even comes with a tap to put in your plastic fermenting buckets etc. I've not used the tap but the actual wand part fits onto the tubing of a Wilko syphon kit - with a bit of little bit of tape around the end of the...
