    California Connosseur Merlot

Bit unfair on the Youngs Merlot & not all apple as you suggest either .... although the Cab Sav is admittedly better! Not sure why you are filtering as this is unneccessary with the Youngs Cellar7 kits which only take 7 days from start to finish. I've done all except the Pinot Noir so far...

bottling a wine kit - corking or a screwcap?

The Youngs Cellar 7 kits at around £30 to make 26 - 30 bottles of wine can be bought with confidence. We've had most in the range this year & all have been very good! Just use screw top bottles, but always get as many spare tops as you can just incase you have one that won't tighten. Most will...

    Magnum Cider Kits

That is a shame really! Apart from one bottle that remained 'flat' .... all but one that tried it, loved it! I'm not in a hurry to do another one just yet due to the high demand for my Mild  , but I'll be doing another one in the New Year! The only real failure so far was a Ginger Beer...

    Homebrewing in Halesowen

The other way to get approval is to make sure you brew something she likes! Try a 7 day wine kit! Fortunately, my missus likes to get involved with choice of brews (beers & wines) & enjoys giving the stuff away to friends to try! Trouble is, she'll give away the last bl00dy bottle if I'm not...

Hi NellyP & welcome! What are you doing to reduce the amount of sediment?

    Airlock fluids.

I agree! I tried using a sterilizing solution in the air-lock for a Ginger Beer & it killed the Yeast. Never managed to clear it & threw the lot away! Safer to use water .... you can always change it for fresh if needs must!

    Magnum Cider Kits

I did the Pear Cider one a few months ago with no problems whatsoever! At the end of the 5 days fermenting it didn't look or taste too promising. After adding the flavour enhancer it again appeared not too promising. However, after being left in the bottle for 5 days to Secondary Ferment I was...

    Advice needed

You'll need a racking tube e.g. a flexable food quality tube to syphon off the liquid into your keg/bottle. Usually, it is a tube with an inserted rigid end that sits inside the beer/wine just above the sediment at the bottom of your FV/Tub/Bottle. A small funnel also helps keep your aim at the...

    secondary fermentation of cider

Yup! There is something very satisfying about watching the air-bubbles rattling away!

Cloudy cider recipe for a newbie

I wouldn't worry too much about it looking lumpy! I worried about that the first time & ended up sifting out some of the cellular fibres floating on top & sedementing on the bottom. I would in hindsight leave well alone next time as there is a hell of a lot of flavour in that lumpy pulp! Once...

Cloudy cider recipe for a newbie

I did my first ever pear cider a few months ago with very little knowledge indeed. I had enough Pears for almost 50litre of juice. Started off with: 1. Washing & chopping all the fruit - removing pips/seeds/core but not the skin. 2. Juicing with a juicer - took a while but fun 3. Let it settle...

    THAT HOMEBREW TASTE!!!

Yup! We're all singing from the same hymn-sheet now! The Carp was around 16lb caught at C&C Hereford site! ... :hmm: ... The 20lb+ ones still eludes me as yet!

    THAT HOMEBREW TASTE!!!

I did'nt mean pressure (just the wrong wording/phrase) .... I meant that the layer of gases given off from the yeast remains there & acts as a (want for a better word) barrier preventing air & any air-born yeasts contaminating the brew. There is however as a by-product a build up of pressure...

    THAT HOMEBREW TASTE!!!

It was late when I posted this .... I did not mean to imply it in the way it reads! But, rather than insult ... :nono: ... perhaps a constructive insight might be helpful! I for one am happy to learn! :wha: :thumb:

    Fermentation Bin Query

I would slightly disagree .... I'd use the tub with no problem, buy DO fit an airlock. Providing the room temperature is around 19 - 22deg then a 7 day kit will be exactly that. 5 days fermentation followed by racking & 2 days adding additives that come with the kit. Bottle on day 7 or 8 & will...

    secondary fermentation of cider

At a guess you have used the yeast too soon after the Campden tablet which is stopping the fermentation. Try using some active yeast from another brew you have on the go & see if it starts to ferment or to see if it too dies off. If it dies, then you may have lost that batch. Otherwise, try to...

    THAT HOMEBREW TASTE!!!

Perhaps this may be due to not having a tight enough lid during fermentation. You need it to allow fermentation to take place without allowing additional air getting in. The pressure it builds up helps fermentation to take place. One thing I'm going to try at the end of my next batch has...

    Label site

Never thought of hair spray ... good idea. :thumb: Was trying to find ready gummed paper to print on, but it can be expensive & I haven't found A4 size as yet. Normally I use Avery sticky label sheets. Coopers Beers have a label maker section on their site which might be worth a look! For...

    Greetings from Birmingham

The shop in Hall Green is one of a chain of 3 in the Birmingham area so you may find one nearer to you. Online shops are good too. If not, I've noticed that even the Wilkinsons chain do a small range of homebrew products. I'm off now to get another Mild kit to brew as I seem to get asked for...
