Ooops, forgot to put bottles somewhere warm after bottling

I bottled a beer of mine on Friday after 10 days maturing in keg. I put a small amount of priming sugar in, but then ran out of time and left the bottles in the cellar. I only remember today to put them somewhere a bit warmer! Is this likely to have prevented the secondary fermentation from...

Can you use 'normal' wheat to make beer?

Cheers! Sorry, didn't see the whole post first time around and missed the link. I'll give that a look. Much appreciated. I note the PITA element. I only have one batch of blackberries to throw in so this may not be a regular part of the experience for me. Easier to just buy malted wheat, but...

Can you use 'normal' wheat to make beer?

Thanks! I'm guessing it would be a roughly 50/50 mix with Pale Malt? I would indeed be mashing it - is a cereal mash something different from normal mashing? Main reason for using this is that a friend is offering me some of his own wheat, rather than buying from a supplier.

    Easy Bottle Labels!

Very cool advice. Thanks for this. Was wondering about how best to do this...

Can you use 'normal' wheat to make beer?

If did a mix of pale malt and wheat (was going to look at recipes but wanted to check viability of wheat first), would that probably work?

Can you use 'normal' wheat to make beer?

Quick question - a friend has offered me some wheat (he grows some). I assume it will come, effectively, from the field. Can I use it straight in a wheatbeer, rather than getting it malted? I'm planning a blackberry wheat beer...

    Cleaning/sterilising bottles - dishwasher?

Agreed. I'm not a big fan of using energy unnecessarily. But with my current rather basic home setup this seemed like potentially a good time saving option. To be safe I'm going to stay old fashioned on it.

    Cleaning/sterilising bottles - dishwasher?

Just to be clear, I was thinking of using the hot rinse purely for sanitising purposes, not cleaning. The bottles have all been washed already...

    Cleaning/sterilising bottles - dishwasher?

Hmmm, that sounds too risky for my liking. May stick to the tried and tested method, in that case.

    Cleaning/sterilising bottles - dishwasher?

Interesting! This guy felt otherwise, so long as you used them straightaway - and for him it is the day job. But I'm cautious. Don't want to risk the precious brew...

    Cleaning/sterilising bottles - dishwasher?

Morning all, I'm about to bottle my first full mash beer (and will use the opportunity to give it a try too, as it's been conditioning for about 10 days now - slurp! ). A handy tip I heard from a pro-brewer the other day was to wash the bottles in a dishwasher on its hottest setting...

    FG seems incredibly low...

I reckon it must be a faulty hydrometer, to be honest. Tried the beer straight from the fermenter and it is tasting pretty drinkable already, and not too strong at all, so it all seems to have gone well. It should be a hoppy best around 4.1% or so, and at a guess I'd say it wasn't much more than...

    FG seems incredibly low...

Thanks both. Just checked the hydrometer with water, and it may indeed be incorrectly marked. Or I'm just reading it wrong. The water reading (admittedly the water was a little cold) seemed to be about 6 points below the beer reading. That being the case, perhaps the beer is actually somewhere...

    FG seems incredibly low...

Hi guys, Quick question - I've just taken a gravity reading of my beer, having left it in the fermenter for 8 days (I was away on holiday so had to leave a few things to chance), and the reading seems to be as low as 1002. Target final gravity was 1010. Has something gone wrong? Is my...

14 hours since yeast was pitched - no apparent reaction

And the good news is, that it all seems to be fermenting away happily now, so all my worries were for nought. I roused anyway, because that seems to be good practice with a liquid yeast. Thanks again to everyone on the forum for their help. I have to say, this forum is an excellent place to get...

14 hours since yeast was pitched - no apparent reaction

Thanks again Jonny. Useful to know. I just blindly followed the guidance, which said it would be sufficient for a 5 gallon batch. But I'd seen hints elsewhere that this might not, in fact, be the case.

14 hours since yeast was pitched - no apparent reaction

Thanks Algernon. Yeast (and water treatment) are the two things that still seem really quite mysterious to me!

14 hours since yeast was pitched - no apparent reaction

Really? I bought it in late July, and it alleges on the vial that the 'best before' date is only 4-months after the bottling date of the yeast. Are they having me on?

14 hours since yeast was pitched - no apparent reaction

By the way, what approach to yeast do others take? I was intrigued to find that my local (and award-winning) micro just used dried yeast from Fermentis. From all I'd read, I thought that was cheating! :D
