    Black pudding

I think, at least with English black puddings, the long straight sausages are meant to be sliced and fried. The ones gathered in a horseshoe shape are often boiled. Both are lovely. One thing I have noticed is that it's much harder to find any with the little cubes of pig fat in them that...

A question about Oatmeal Stout and the perfect carbonation

I'd almost advocate that, depending on the levels of residual slowly fermented sugars left in the beer. Stouts, for my taste, develop an unwanted tang as the level of dissolved CO2 gets higher. It'll be the carbonic acid, I'm sure. I would always want bottles to have some level of priming...

    Grain prices creeping up.

I'm sure the cost of energy and fuel have contributed to the price rises. The energy and fuel bosses and shareholders are the winners here. Those countries who blew up Nordstream 2 (my money is on the USA here) have cost us dearly.

    Do you aerate?

Lallemand say "Aeration is not required for the first pitch" https://www.lallemandbrewing.com/en/canada/blog/lallemand-premium-dry-yeast-for-quality-consistent-fermentations/

    Do you aerate?

Yes, I aerate. As some have said it's beneficial to yeast health and just getting a fermentation happening is not the whole story. The yeast manufacturers recommend it. When you boil a liquid you drive off dissolved gasses. This is why, when you put a pan of water on the hob, it starts...

    Using a Hop Spider

The springer looks like a top peice of kit.

    Using a Hop Spider

Yeah, the Brewzilla pumps do block easily - but as you say, the old blow down the recirculation pipe usually restores function.

    Using a Hop Spider

I haven't heard that. Certainly I have not found a problem using the pump during the boil. Using a plate chiller, for example, would requre the use of the pump to pump wort at very high temperatures.

    Old brewer but new here

Welcome. I too started out with Dave Line's recipes and I agree with the comments made above. I've recently returned to breweing after a 30 year hiatus. So much has changed. The kit you can get today for small batch brewing makes life so much easier.

    Using a Hop Spider

I use a hop spider. I know that people say that they reduce hop utilisation. I haven't, subjectively, found that to be the case, but I haven't brewed that many beers using my current Brewzilla setup, and possibly it's the way a hop spider is used, rather than whether it's used at all that...

what do you do with your brew?

I'll trial one or two - see how it goes. I like the idea of being able to vent build up of CO2 from the bag using the second opening. That could come in very handy.

what do you do with your brew?

Useful info - though quite pricey. I'd have to be able to get 5 uses out of them to compete on price alone. But there is the 'saving the planet aspect' also.

Would be interested to see which ones you mean exactly.

what do you do with your brew?

For beer, the industry uses double skinned plastic bags - so I do too. The inner layer is permeable to CO2 produced by the beer (but impervious to liquid) the outer layer is completely impermeable. So, if the bag balloons a bit, you get CO2 collecting in the gap between inner and outer. If...

what do you do with your brew?

https://www.gtonlineshop.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=65&product_id=163 ... Bag in a box.... I just don't bother with the box. You can attach a beer engine (hand pull pump) to these and suck the beer out, they collapse rather than letting oxygen in, so the beer has a reasonable...

what do you do with your brew?

A friend has a beautiful 8 person 'pub' in his back garden where friends will drink once or twice a week, up until recently he used to buy beer in, in boxes, which is why I set up my brewery. I used to brew all grain beers, years ago, so I knew what could be achieved. I must admit that friends...

Nicola Sturgeon says time is right to resign as Scotland's first minister

I wish they'd get their skates on and charge him. I'm tired of all this whiting.

This is supposed to be a searious discussion, and you're all just treating it as an opportunaty for fish puns! Discrayceful!

    Ultratap - English Sparkler Spout

Has anyone used one of these? The write up seems to indicate that these are for brews pressurised with nitrogen, but that they 'allow the nitrogen gas to flow smoothly through the faucet'. Does that mean that they aren't for brews pressurised with CO2?

    Stainless Steel Fermenters

I have used both. I did encounter a temporary problem with plastic in that the plastic did slightly taint the beer for the first brew or two, even though I had thoroughly washed it out. This went away in subsequent brews. Stainless is easier to sterlise, I boil up a few kettles and pour...
