Do I need to sanitise my leaf hops prior to dry hopping?

I've got my brew in a secondary fermenter and am planning to dry hop with leaf hops in a sanitised muslin bag. This might seem like a stupid question, but it just occurred to me that I don't know if the leaf hops themselves need to be sanitised, and if they do I have no idea how to achieve...

    To use finings or not?

Cheers. So presumably cooling the beer will cause most of the yeast to go dormant, but they'll come "back to life" again when warmed up in the bottles?

    To use finings or not?

So for those that do use finings what would suggest? Bear in mind I will be bottling. Cheers.

Coopers IPA with a little experimentation

Cheers Wez. It's down to 1.014 already and the temperatures now under control. Tastes pretty good too for a two day old brew!

    Isinglass

Sorry to slightly hijack the thread, but if I used isinglass in my SF would there still be enough yeast in suspension for bottle conditioning?

    Santitation Disaster!

That makes a lot of sense, cheers. As an aside, how long can you leave sanitising solution around before it loses it's zing. I find I'm always having to sanitise bits and bobs and its a pain mixing up a solution every time.

Coopers IPA with a little experimentation

Well it's been abut 24hrs since pitching and it's fermenting like crazy. It's got a behemoth krausen which has made it all the way from the 4 gallon mark into my airlock. The wort temperature's 26C while the ambient temperatures 20C. Should I try and cool it down? Coopers say the range is...

Coopers IPA with a little experimentation

Cheers Vossy1, and thanks for answering my questions Wez. I find that all the kits I've brewed to instructions (regarding the brew length) have turned out 4%ish, which is a bit weak for my taste. I don't know if there's any kind of resource that lists the estimated abv of kits, but I guess...

Coopers IPA with a little experimentation

I really am quite new at this so I hope you don't mind a few questions. 1. I'm not going to be kegging, but could I dry hop in a secondary fermenter before bottling? 2. Apart from increasing the OG and alcohol content what other effects will reducing the brew length have on the beer. e.g...

Coopers IPA with a little experimentation

Got hold of a Coopers IPA kit, it seems to get very good reviews. Made a few changes to the kit instructions: - Boiled 20g of golding hops for 10 mins, then steeped another 20g in the boiled water for about 15. - Sieved this into my fermenter. - Dissolved the contents of the can into this and...

    Santitation Disaster!

Yep, don't think i'll find that advice too hard to follow :D Thanks for all the reassuring comments. I can relax now!

    Santitation Disaster!

My hand was clean, but the rest of my arm had been living inside my jumper since my morning shower. Didn't have really have time to sanitise it. Guess I'm just going to have to hope for the best!

    Santitation Disaster!

I was turning the tap on my bucket upward to add sanitation solution prior to racking. Then disaster struck and beer started leaking from the edges of the tap. Anything I tried to do from the outside of the bucket just made things worse and increased the flow of beer onto the floor. Then in a...

    Brupak's Brewer's Choice Kits

Can you recommend any particular coopers kit? I've heard good things about them before. I'm not too fussy, but am looking for an ale rather than a lager, and something that should produce an alcohol content of 4.5% abv plus. Cheers

    Brupak's Brewer's Choice Kits

Has anyone had any experience with these kits? I don't know if they're a particularly new product, but I can't find much information about them. I've done a couple of the canned beer kits and feel like getting a bit more involved and knowledgeable about the brewing process. So I was wondering...

    Temperature while fermenting?

That's nothing! ;) I've turned off the central heating in my "brewing room" and plugged in an oil heater so I can keep a constant temperature :thumb:. My flatmates don't seem to mind though . So the consensus seems to be that I can go cooler, and therefore hopefully get nicer tasting...

    Temperature while fermenting?

This might seem a bit obsessive, but when brupaks tell me to keep my fermenter at 18 to 20 degrees C are they referring to room temperature or the actual wort within the fermenter? Due to, I guess, the exothermic nature of fermentation my fermenting wort is 3 degrees warmer than air...

Kwik Clear finings in SF - enough yeast left?

Nice one, i'll let you know how it turns out :drink:

Kwik Clear finings in SF - enough yeast left?

Cheers, I suspected as much. Maybe next time if I used a milder form of fining adding the extra yeast wouldn't be necessary? I'm still new at this, so is there any particular type of beer yeast you would recommend, or does it not really matter? I'm making Brupaks Fixby Gold if that makes any...
