    Kveik

FYI if anyone is looking for a dehydrator, Aldi have a 10L one in for £30, which is a good price. https://www.aldi.co.uk/ambiano-food-dehydrator-10l/p/705803419936500?gclid=CjwKCAjwiaX8BRBZEiwAQQxGx-9AE_sa4avw-bIv226RDjM4s6wnlX2Xir-Sxzuts1X2XQMiA38axBoCcEUQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Got a water report, now the hard bit!

I don't have any tablets. Prefer to just use up what I've got. I had a tub of the metabisulphite left over from something else so I'm just using it up. It's going to take a while lol. I'm measuring out salts anyway at that point so I doubt it's any more hassle than splitting a tablet. Anyway, a...

Got a water report, now the hard bit!

Maybe not, but if you have sodium metabisulphite and a set of scales anyway, why have the tablets taking up space?

    How to Open ferment?

One thing I forgot to add, and I don't know if this is just a kveik thing or a general beer thing, so forgive me if I'm stating the obvious. After the krausen drops the CO2 blanket really seems to loose its effectiveness. I cover mine with sanitised clingfilm as soon as I've top cropped the...

Got a water report, now the hard bit!

Sodium metabisulphite is cheaper than campden tablets for dechlorination if you have an accurate set of scales. Dose at 0.1g/ 5L for dechlorination

Good for you, it's a versatile technique. Sorry if that derailed the thread a wee bit, hope your batch turns out well :-)

Best Star SAN Alternative including all new Chemsan

Things that I've put away clean when put away are just rinsed to remove any dust using running (soft) water and then soaked in the home made sanitiser. I have some VWP that I use if I feel I need something extra to make sure all the grot's off them before I put them away. It's good stuff. The...

    How to Open ferment?

This. is pretty much what I do, and I only use kveik yeast. Maintain the high temperature for the first 48h then start reducing. I step crash down to room temp 5-7 degrees C a time to retain as much of the ester profile as possible. Also there are alternatives to using a fermentation chamber-...

Best Star SAN Alternative including all new Chemsan

I thoroughly mix 28g of thin bleach with 20L water, then add 28g distilled water. 30 second contact time. Can be used no rinse and remains active for at least a couple of hours in an open container. After that though I'd make a fresh batch, the free chlorine will slowly outgas.

    Suggested Water Profiles by Style

A traditional way to build body in these beers is to decoct a portion of the wort off and boil it down a fraction. This builds a carbohydrate profile that's heavier on caramelised and otherwise less fermentable sugars. I'm presently fermenting a wee heavy in which I took the first third of the...

    Suggested Water Profiles by Style

It's a style I've brewed a few times now, albeit with kveik yeast using a profile of approx 120-150ppm Ca and a 2:1 Chloride:Sulphate. Chloride's been in the 150-200ppm range. Presently using 160ppm.

Stainless steel and salt additions - corrosion?

If you are using tap water then lowering mineral contents would be a much better idea than adding more minerals. Look up your local water company's website and get their figures for your water supply to get a rough idea of where you're at chemically. I'm guessing it's hard as nails. If I...

Non temp control on "warm" ferment beers...

Have you considered trying a kveik yeast? There are strains that produce less in the way of esters if you don't want the fruit. They will still eat more, drop the pH a bit more and finish a bit dryer than other beer yeasts. In my (albeit limited) experience you can compensate for this in the...

What online full grain brewing shop?

I like maltmiller for bits and pieces, get er brewed are good price wise and brewuk are pretty good. Also they do Baird's pale malt, which I've grown to like. You don't mention where you live now, but I noticed you mentioned Hampshire in your post history. That's the same county as Warminster...

    Food Grade Silicone Sealant?

If you know any fish keepers they might have some aquarium silicone lying around. To the best of my knowledge it's food contact grade. See resources for fish keepers here and here. I used it to seal the seams and filter mesh edges in the tea urn I've turned into a mash tun and no complaints...
