    Hopping schedule

The latest question to pop into my mind that I can't find an answer to: What does "*hops* @ 0 mins" mean? For example, a recipes hopping schedule is as follows: Challenger hops 7.6%AA 64g @ 90 mins Golding hops 4.6%AA 40g @ 10 mins Golding hops 40g @ 0 mins. <------ :wha: Does the "*hops*...

    Wort chiller water recycling

Wow! Suddenly 200 Ltrs/hr seems weak and feeble! Sadly I've "leaped before I looked" so will have to see how 200ltr/hr goes. If it doesn't work...well. B*gger. Guess it'll give me an idea of how weak it is and allow an informed decision on a potential upgrade!

    Wort chiller water recycling

Cheers guys. I don't mind using SOME water, I guess it's part of the process. Was thinking something along the lines of a 25ltr fermenter or similar. If the water gets too hot ill give it to the plants and replace. The fountain pump has a 200ltr/hour flow rate...hadn't thought of restrictions...

    Bottling after barrel?

I did this so I could take a few bottles of beer to a BBQ - I've since decided kegs aren't that useful given their poor transportation options! Whilst I didn't add any more priming sugar to the bottles, this was only because I was drinking them a few hours later. If I was doing it longer term...

    Wort chiller water recycling

Evening all, I'm contemplating my first AG brew and one element is bothering me a bit - the chiller coil. Hooking it up to the tap and leaving to run for...20-30 minutes?! Seems a bit wasteful on the water front (I'm a Yorkshireman...) Has anyone tried recycling the water? Would there be any...

    Lemon Beer

So here's what I did in the end. Coopers wheat beer kit Coopers wheat extract 4 lemons (zest and juice), boiled for 20 minutes. One of the zested and juiced lemons was added to the boil (so by this stage it was just the white rind bit, which everyone says is the bitter part). Sugar and water as...

    Lemon Beer

Did I say IPA? :hmm: Meant wheat beer! I've opted for a coopers wheat beer kit, plus a can of coopers liquid wheat extract. That's gone in the FV as per kit instructions (including the sugar...) along with 2 lemons (rind and peel) which I boiled up in a bit of water for 15mins. Made up to...

    Mash tun vs boiler...?

Looks like I'm investing in one if these then: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/100-litre-HomeBrew-HLT-Boiler-lid-stainless-steel-pot-Home-brew-/290943558718?pt=UK_Home_Garden_Food_SM&hash=item43bd96643e Which looks exactly like Vossys "how to" build, but without the faff for me AND investment in...

    Mash tun vs boiler...?

Thanks man, particularly sage advice. I've been staring in awe at Vossy's "how to make a stainless steel boiler/hlt" - it appeals to my DIY ego. I'll give biab a go I think. As you say, slightly less outlay at first with the bonus in 1/3 parts of the 3 part "system" ticked off the list if I...

    Mash tun vs boiler...?

Thanks all. Some good advice, and a cracking link to a "how to". Perfect. So to dumb it down even further (because if my analogy is right I've likely I've understood it): Mashtun is essentially a "teapot". Sparging is rinsing the "tea leaves" to extract all the "flavour". You take the...

    Lemon Beer

Thanks for the replies all. Given my lack of knowledge/experience I think I'm going to brew an IPA from a kit. Seems like the cheaper option for experimentation purposes. I've got 2 fermentation bins, so ill split the wort; half will be lemon rind, half will be juice and rind. I'll post the...

    Mash tun vs boiler...?

As always, I apologise if this is covered elsewhere, but there are 134 pages of "general brewing equipment discussion" and I am but one (confused) man. Mash tun. Boiler. HLT. :hmm: Is there a difference? If there is, what is it? What does HLT mean? My basic understanding is that you...

    Lemon Beer

Cool. Few replies there. Whit bier: I shall google this/search forums. Pilsner: you said you added 4 limes; is that 4 sliced, 4 rind and juice, 4 whole (bobbing around)?? Wye valley thing: OHHHHH! So that's what cascade is. A few recipes I've found assumed I wasn't an idiot and just said...

    Lemon Beer

Evening all, I'm looking to make something light and refreshing, and having just juiced and peeled (not in that order) 8 lemons for use in 10ltrs of elderflower fizzy wine I wondered about making a beer with a lemon favour to it? A quick scout on here hasn't turned up much, and other forms...

    Apricot Wine

Thanks all for the replies thus far. I'm not doing this right away, but planning it. By the time I come to do it there should be apricots in supermarkets various. Or if e answer to my below question is "dried" then I can do it whenever. I guess the main thing I want to know is if one method...
