    citra and casscade pale

I agree, the cost of homebrew is still far cheaper than that of beer in the shops. But my recipe calls for nearly 100gs of citra and cascade, so thats a fair chunk of cash, probably 40%+ of the cost of the whole brew. Still less that £1 a bottle I imagine and rather nice, so I'm not that...

    citra and casscade pale

Hey, I brewed a Citra and Cascade Pale yesterday as well :) Used Magnum for bitterness, and did first wort hopping with some of the cascade and citra. Additions of cascade and citra at 30 and 0. Yesterday was the second batch of it, first is excellent - best ive brewed. Even so, the first...

    Show us your brewery

Here's my current setup (right) and yesterday's delivery; 100ltr boiler (left). On a campaign of a phased upgrade to a 100ltr nano over the next year or so, spurred on by some of the lovely breweries on this thread. Next step is to get a 3KW element fitted and some sort of false bottom...

    Wilko fermenter question

Hi, I got a wilko fermenter awhile back. I use a rubber bored bung used in a Demijohn for wine making and a bubbler airlock. Both also available from wilkos and cheap enough. The plastic lid of mine was also really easy to cut - a craft knife/Stanley knife worked fine. However, before I...

    100ltr upgrade - help me design :)

Thanks for that :) I was originally thinking gas. Reasons I've moved away from that idea are: -Ventilation concerns. I know some people say its fine, and I can open the garage door I guess, but still something I can do without worrying about. -I understand electric more than gas -Electric...

    100ltr upgrade - help me design :)

Morning all, So I've caught the brewing bug in a big way. I did a few kits and quickly moved to an all grain setup. It's been great and given me some good beers and experience. But there are a LOT of losses in the system (7.5ltrs of deadspace in the HLT - which also doubles as the boiler, and...

    Primary/secondary fermentation ?

Hi, Country wine recipies I've tried have suggested covering the must with a cloth to allow it to breathe but prevent dirt, bacteria etc getting into it. I have a fermenter full of Gorse Champagne atm, and whilst its got a lid and an airlock its only about 1/3rd full (its a 23ltr beer...

Hull Real Ale and Cider Festival 24th-26th April

Hi! Sadly I've never made it, only recently gotten into brewing and Ale generally. Ashamed to admit that I used to drink Carling! As you say, right on my doorstep but so far the only festival I've managed to attend was the Ely Winter 2014 festival! Bit of a trek out! But I've heard good things...

Hull Real Ale and Cider Festival 24th-26th April

Afternoon all, Just a quick note to say that the Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA Real Ale and Cider Festival starts Thursday 24th through to Saturday 26th April in Hulls Holy Trinity Church. A bit short notice, but if you're in the area you should pop down for a sip of beer or cider under the...

    Worst. Brew day. EVER!

Cheers all. Yeasts in it and it's already fermenting. So fingers crossed. Can't wait I try it and see how it comes out - here's hoping it's the best I've done (to be honest it doesn't have vast competition  ) Thanks for the top tip on the baking trays! I currently have a washer from a...

    Worst. Brew day. EVER!

Happy new year all! If this post belongs somewhere else then sorry, please move it and a thousand pardons. So, whilst I don't have a great many brews to my name, today's brew has to rank pretty highly in brewing fails. It could only have gotten worse if I'd ended up in A&E! One of my New...

    1st all grain attempt...aghhh!

Thanks! It's been an "experience" so far. Just made up a St Peters Golden ale kit so I can do a comparison. Thanks to all for the reassurances and tips. Just writing down my own method for next time.

    1st all grain attempt...aghhh!

Cheers gents! I've pitched the yeast and it looks ok. Bit of what appears to be residue in the fermenter floating about but I'm stuck at this stage. Fingers crossed it tastes ok to be worth it. Fingers crossed for the next one!

    1st all grain attempt...aghhh!

Good to know, thanks! On a positive note I feel I've made all my mistakes at once, so it's all down hill from here :)

    1st all grain attempt...aghhh!

Yep, that's the guide I used for this brew. But I think I concentrated on the science too much rather than just having a go first time round. Measured out my grain and hops. Error: could have done this during the time the HLT needed to heat up, but was following the guide. Measured all my...

    1st all grain attempt...aghhh!

Cheers. I thought it was fly sparging but didn't want to say so with conviction and prove to be a fool! I think I've maybe tried to run before I can walk. New equipment, processes I don't fully understand - its all added time to the day. Following the guide I linked I was trying to work out...

    1st all grain attempt...aghhh!

As this is my first all grain I'm going to accept that sounding like an idiot is inevitable: I ink I'm fly Sparging: T-shaped bar that spins as hot water passes through it, showering the grains.

    1st all grain attempt...aghhh!

I have a 3 tier set up: HLT, mashtun, fermenter. No idea why it's taking so long to sparge. Maybe HLT size (35lt), maybe newness vs expectations - maybe it's taken exactly the right amount of time and I'm too n00b to realise it. Whatever the reason, I'll be making 23ltrs of some sort of golden...

    1st all grain attempt...aghhh!

So. All grain eh? What a nightmare first time round! I've been following this link: http://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=493 But I'm actually doing a Golden ale as follows: Marris otter pale malt: 4040g Wheat malt: 100g Crystal malt: 220g Challenger hops: 32g @9mins Golding...

    Wort chiller water recycling

Well Vossey, you win! The pump came, and its pittiful - rain falls faster than this thing pumps. I don't even see how it could be useful for a water fountain! As I'm on with my first AG brew I guess I'll be paying the water company a few more squidillions this month.
