    Fiery Ginger Beer

Hi I bottled my second batch on Tuesday. Finished the last bottle of the last batch this week - it definitely improves with age - my husband said that it tasted 'unpleasant' when I first made it. I added fifteen tablespoons of Splenda after straining it. This time bottled it all with a teaspoon...

    Bottling After Campden Tablets

Thank you Crazy, but are they fishy finings? I'm veggie. It was nice and clear before somebody 'helped' me!

    Bottling After Campden Tablets

Thank you Chewie. I haven't had a chance to bottle it yet (events took over), so it has cleared a bit more. I was more concerned about how long I could leave it - or can I leave it indefinitely - I would like it to be clear (I don't mind the sediment at the bottom, but shouldn't I lay it down...

    Bottling After Campden Tablets

Hi Having made gooseberry wine earlier this year, I went to bottle it today. I have prepared fresh demi-johns in order to rack off from the sediment and mix with Campden tablets. I had some 'help' and the first demi-john is now cloudy! How long can I let it settle before I must bottle it...

    What Should I do?

Thank you. I'm going to test it next Saturday and I'll let you know. Apparently, just because it's not bubbling, it doesn't mean it's not fermenting. It's clearing well though! (It tastes nice!)

    What Should I do?

Hi Folks I made some gooseberry wine nearly 4 weeks ago and put it into demi johns (2 one gallon, and 2 half gallon) about two and a half weeks ago. One of the gallons and one of the half gallons, which is a third full, stopped fermenting after a few days, the other two are still going. Have...

    Air lock or 'cloth'

I have just strained and pressed the gooseberry must and transferred it back to the original bin for a few days until putting into demi johns. The OG was 1094 and it is now down to 1070 and was bubbling at about once every eight seconds before I strained it. I have seen one bubble since doing...

    Air lock or 'cloth'

Thank you Engineer. I am using an air lock at the moment. Stirring several times a day? Better do that then. Keeping the stirrer in the bin - what a good idea - shall do that too! We haven't done too well with our rhubarb this year, barely enough just to stew. Loads of gooseberries though...

    Air lock or 'cloth'

Thanks, Chippytea. That makes me feel better! The bubbling has speeded up in the last couple of hours, even! Would you stir every day, or leave well alone? Most advice for putting into Demijohns seems to be 5-7 days - depending on what? Whether you have time? Specific gravity? Cheers

    Air lock or 'cloth'

Hi Folks I have just made two gallons of gooseberry wine (I hope!) and wondered, having read differing 'ideas' whether I should be using an air lock on my fermenting bucket. I have one on at the moment. Also, temperature - I pitched my yeast at about 34 c (90f) as had to go to bed, and left...

    Fiery Ginger Beer

Well, day 10 and it's bubbling at about every 22 seconds. I've just tested it and it is down to 1010 - from 1040 - about 4%? It tastes nice - about the right amount of gingeriness, flat (I suppose this will be better when I put it in the bottles and add the sugar), but not enough 'body' - is...

    Fiery Ginger Beer

Thanks John It's about 12 - 18 seconds now - although, apparently it isn't an indication - just for those, like me, who trawl for such information! I shan't test with the hydrometer until Tuesday - a week after making.

I thought 'The Snug' was for non-brewing related topics - just a bit of fun. Hey ho!

    How Old Is Your...

...appliance? I was just cleaning the oven and remembering a conversation at a party where the person that I was speaking to reckoned his oven was old - about 2 years. Mine is about 20 years old. It made me wonder how long people keep things for - till they die? Here's a list of mine, what...

    Brewing Again

Thanks for the welcome folks. It's 17% at the moment. Warmer upstairs but not as much room! Bubbling every 34 second on the stop watch (my counting was a bit out) - Am I getting obsessive? LOL!

    Fiery Ginger Beer

    - I lied - it is bubbling - about every 50 seconds - I thought it would be going mad by now, though!

    It's not bubbling - what have I done wrong?:-|

    Brewing Again

Hi Since I've been invited to say 'hello' - 'hello'! Done a bit of brewing in the past. Our first cider, made from our, sadly-no-more, apple tree was fantastic. The second attempt - the following year - disastrous. We made a batch of Ringwood, (mash and everything) which was a bit of a faff...

    Fiery Ginger Beer

Hi Inspired by Rickthebrew's recipe - and subsequent feedback - I have just made a batch. The only difference I made was three lemons instead of two, as they were quite small. The other thing I did was 'make it up' to 22.7 litres as it said '5 gallons' originally. I have now reread the thread...
