    First attempt

I take that to mean the recommended temperature is around 21ºC but it will still ferment as low as 13ºC. Obviously I'm a complete beginner, and may have read this incorrectly. If Coopers believe the best temperature is 13ºC, then IMHO they should state that as the preferred temperature...

    First attempt

Yeah, me neither, which is why I followed the manufacturer's instructions for the kit to the letter. If I altered the method and it turned out rank, the manufacturer would just come back with, "you didn't follow the instructions properly," or some such. 19ºC was when I chucked the yeast in...

    First attempt

That's my Coopers European Lager in the FV, following the instructions on the tin. Specific gravity at start is 1050 @19ºC and the temperature under the stairs is reasonably constant. Looking forward to getting it into bottles in a couple of weeks(ish) then seeing whether this brewing...

    Labels!!!!!!

I used to do wine labels on the printer & stick with pritt type stick. Comes off very easily. If I wasn't giving them away I didn't bother with labels. Just played alkie roulette

    Tiny bubbles on pouring

If you look at the bottom of many pub beer glasses you will notice they are etched. This is to make bubbles rise. Apparently it makes the drink more pleasing to the eye or something. Try a brand new glass. Don't wash it with soap, just rinse it with very hot water and allow to dry naturally...

    Dandelion Ale - well hopefully

It's an old recipe for brewed beer. I'm not sure of the expected ABV, because it's been years since I had any. My old great-granny brewed it. She also brewed nettle beer, but I think that recipe might be lost, unless my sister has that notebook.

    update on airlock not bubbling

Sounds like it will be fine. Good luck

    Dandelion Ale - well hopefully

I'm aiming for dandelion & burdock once I manage a couple of drinkable brews under my belt. I've got an old recipe for ginger beer as well, so will be giving that a blast at some point in the future too.

    Flippin phones !

I was amazed in Applecross a few years back how many folk were obsessing over mobile devices. I work in IT, but if I had the choice I wouldn't have a phone. I went to Applecross camping, for the sole purpose of driving the Bealach na Bà in my sensible estate car, so once away from the village...

    of Suppliers and Couriers

So, the reply to yesterday's email was: "Cancelled." In other words, 7 days after taking my money, they hadn't even bothered sending it. Now I have to wait for the money to come back to my account. That's a complete liberty. They're on my "do not deal with" list.

    of Suppliers and Couriers

Does anyone know of a supplier who deals exclusively with Royal Mail/Parcelforce? The reason I ask.... I have been let down so many times by shonky courier companies and their lazy, dishonest drivers that I generally only order now from people who use RM or Parcelforce. I ordered a kit last week...

Are screw top wine bottle tops OK to re-use?

I've used screwtop bottles in the past with corks. The necks are thinner so take care. I always used a twin lever corker, rather than the type you thump, and got away with it. (I also used it to put corks in beer bottles for when you don't want to open a full bottle of wine......)

    Hello to everyone

I think it is the only brewery/distillery tour I have done where the sampling lasts about 3 times longer than the tour. :D

    Yeast starters

Thanks folks. I think for the time being I will simply stick to the manufacturer instructions, until I get a few drinkable brews under my belt. Hopefully my first lager kit will be with me no later than mid-week. I ordered it on-line in my impatience, rather than wait until the weekend and...

    Fiery Ginger Beer

I got a really manky demi-john years ago when I was brewing wine. I filled it to the neck with boiling water and soaked it for a few days before emptying and refilling with boiling water. I added a couple of steradent to it, and left it overnight. By the time I'd emptied it and rinsed it out the...

    Yeast starters

I'm fairly sure this has been covered before, but what's the general consensus re. yeast starters with beer? When I was making wine, I always started my yeast a day or so in advance, and fed it with brewing sugar. Being new to this beer malarkey, and still to get started when my first kit...

    Does this look infected?

If it tastes OK, maybe skim the gunk off'f the top and leave overnight before dry-hopping to see whether anything else forms?

    One for the Glasgow contingent

Defo the one. Glenbrew was the name I had forgotten. Looks like they've moved to a much nicer unit too. The previous was dank and grotty looking.

    One for the Glasgow contingent

Certainly in the right area, but not sure that was the name. Good to know. It's the closest brew shop to me that's got easy parking.

    Hello to everyone

Welcome aboard. The cairngorm brewery do some lovely ales. My last 3 visits to Aviemore have included a tour of the brewery, followed by a sampling session.
