BIAB #1 - Simple Pale - Didn't go so well!

Update... The og should have been 1.045. Had a few variations on the recipe and looked at the wrong one. Anyway, had a taster after its been in the fermenter for a week and it's almost exactly what I was after in terms of taste! nice and bitter with a summery feel. It is very...

BIAB #1 - Simple Pale - Didn't go so well!

I'm tempted to do as most have suggested and just leave it this time. In terms of efficiency I went for 70% as I think I was under the impression that was normal for BIAB? Other than that I had nothing else to base an efficiency on. There was plenty of space in the pot for the grains to...

BIAB #1 - Simple Pale - Didn't go so well!

It's fermenting so going to leave it for now. Don't want to disturb it if it tastes ok. That said I can literally smell the bitterness so I think it's going to be rather bitter! I may wait for the main fermentation to complete and have a taster. Don't mind very bitter ales but doesn't really...

BIAB #1 - Simple Pale - Didn't go so well!

I've been thinking about doing this BIAB for a while now having only done kits in the past. This was the recipe which I largely followed; only difference was the addition of a bit of fuggles to mix things up. Was left over from some dry hoping I did recently...

    Planning First BIAB

I'm planning on doing a biab very soon and my main approach is to go small and simple. Doing a 15ltr boil using single malt single hop recipe. Might not be a real recipe as such but should still hopefully taste good. For me the first few times is more about getting a process working and...

My First Simple BIAB Recipe - Feedback

Hey all. To be honest I started wanting to do some sort of pale ale but only had specific hops and maris pale and the barley. This is a completely made up recipe with no real thought other than the abv and a very rough sense of wanting a pale ale type beer. Advice and comments are great...

My First Simple BIAB Recipe - Feedback

Thanks guys that's useful info. I'll do more research on mash temps as I think I knew a bit about what happens with different temperatures but not really accounted for it in this recipe. I'll also add hops at the end of the boil too. Cheers :)

Anyone please? Don't want to make a mess of my first BIAB!

My First Simple BIAB Recipe - Feedback

Having done a few kits I'm now moving onto doing a small BIAB brew in a 15ltr pot. I've had a look at a fair few AG and BIAB recipes recently but would appreciate some comments on the following recipe... tried to keep it simple and be realistic with the efficiency, but might have missed...

Coopers Kit & Goldings, Amarillo and Fuggles - what to try?

Just having a bottle of the coopers described above and it's developed a real fruity twang and lost a bit of the hoppyness. Anyone any thoughts on why? Was expecting to loose some hoppyness. Is the fruitiness just a result of the flavour imparted by the yeast over time? Its a 2ltr bottle so...

    time to move on....to AG

Is the difference between kits and extract similar? I guess it's all a mater of preference / taste as I've heard lots of great reviews on extract brewing - mostly saying you can get a near AG pint, albeit at a higher cost.

    time to move on....to AG

Also interested in this as planning an extract brew next. No expert but does a lot of the twang come from the yeast sediment so could be the same in extract and ag?

Coopers Kit & Goldings, Amarillo and Fuggles - what to try?

I have a 15ltr pot on the way to try some extract brews. Although adding hops to a kit helps, fundamentally it's still a kit so it's thin and has that kit taste. Maybe due to sediment more than anything, but that's another question. I have noticed that the hoppy aroma seems to be an initial...

Coopers Kit & Goldings, Amarillo and Fuggles - what to try?

I've never really understood if boiling hops just in water will provide any bitterness as that doesn't result in isomerisation? If not why bother boiling them or does that give you flavour instead of just the aroma that dry hoping gives you? :wha:

Coopers Kit & Goldings, Amarillo and Fuggles - what to try?

Bit of an update. I did a coopers real ale kit with brew enhancer and s04 yeast. Fermented for 2 weeks, then dry hopped with about 30g of fuggles in primary for just under a week, then crash cooled for a few days before bottling. Been in the warm for 2 weeks now and yesterday put one in the...

    Advice on fermentation

I've just done my 5th brew and fermentation took about 13 days based on getting a constant gravity reading 3 days apart. I would hang on a few days at least before taking another reading. If the kit says 1009 it should get there with more time.

    which bottles?

I normally find a 2ltr bottle is about right for a quick session. :drink: Ive also found that the yeast gives more off flavours near the bottom of bottles so has more of an impact on smaller bottles.

    extracting bitterness from hops

Oops didn't see the previous post. I assumed the same I think based on isomerisation being a process that occurs in solution?

    extracting bitterness from hops

Take a look at this: http://www.howtobrew.com/section1/chapter5-1.html I've been researching enhancing kits a bit recently and reading this whole book gives you a much better understanding of everything.

    Adding sugar

The cost of going AG has been a big put off for me. In reality I may not get to spend a lot of time doing AG, but that sounds very reasonable! Think I'll take a look at the "for sale" area! :thumb: From my relatively limited knowledge I guess I can first buy a boiler and do extract then move...
