    AG No.3 Bohemian Pils

It's not actually. Have you never noticed that a large volume of beer is a lot darker than a pint, or measuring cylinder. Exactly like deep water is darker than a bathful. When I syphoned a bit out for sampling, it was pale as anything. Much like Urquall in fact.

    Brewery build.

The improvements have been implemented. 1. Ok this one hasn't. But the supporting block of wood under the tap still worked..... 2. Doubling the slots resulted in a very fast sparge that had to be turned down with the tap. Still, better to have the ability to go down. Also I think the pils mash...

    AG No.4 Gose

On the Bank holiday I brewed up No.4, a nice salty Gose. 15L batch. OG 0.048 FG 0.012 4.8% abv 1.73kg pils malt 1.13kg wheat 0.683kg acidulated malt 0.2kg oat hulls 2.1AAU hellertau blanc hops @60min 1tsp irish moss @15min 21g crushed coriander @10min 15g sea salt @10min...

    AG No.3 Bohemian Pils

The Pils was racked into three 5L water bottles and is now conditioning in the fridge at a balmy 2°c. I took a small sample and even though it's flat and a bit rough around the edges, it's clear that it's going to be awesome. roll on the end of June.

    AG No.3 Bohemian Pils

It's spent the last two weeks gently bubbling away in the brew fridge and has dropped from .048 to .020, so today I reset the temp to 19 for the diacetyl rest. Doing a proper AG with all the bits and bobs is very exciting.....

    Best preparation for bottling?

Stick it in a fridge as cold as you can without it freezing for a couple of days, then bring it back up to room temp for priming. The sediment will form a dense cake at the bottom of the FV and with a bit of practice you can recover just about all the beer without hoovering up any crud.

Best (cheapest) way to keep fv at right temp

+1 for a brew fridge. 99p for a fridge off eBay, 20 quid special deal for a 308, a tenner for a bar heater and that's the lot. I can easily brew at any temp I like and it keeps the missus happy as the spare room no longer spells like a brewery.

    Brewery build.

My current list of additions and improvements. 1. modify the mash manifold so that the weight of mash doesn't make it part company with the connector to the valve. 2. Increase the number of manifold slots to up the sparge rate a bit. 3. Insulate tun lid. 4. Investigate lack of siphoning in...

But that would still only run the fan while the fridge was on. I've set about ordering a load of new (but cheap) bits to make everything a bit better. This includes a 12V pc fan which I'll wire up to an old phone charger.

How to brew massive quantity of extract kit beer?

doesn't need to be. For about 3 hours of effort, I've just made myself a boiler and mash tun that will just about handle a 20L brew for about £70 all in. Another £30 got me a temp controllable brew fridge, and another £20 will get me an immersion cooler before my next brew. This is...

    Conditioning beer in wine bottles

I don't know about the pressure breaking the bottles, but you can't use a capper as wine bottles have a different shaped rim. Be best place for a free supply of suitable bottles is your friendly local. Mine get through a lot of kopperberg cider. Their bottles are a lovely khaki colour and more...

    Brewery build.

So, after it's first use, how did my new set up perform? Firstly, the mash tun worked pretty well. There were a couple of issues with the manifold I need to address. It is only a loose fit into the tank connector and when the cooler was full of 4kg of grain and 12L of water, the sides bulged...

Yes. If it's anything like mine, it'll take a few hours to activate. Try it now.

Yeah, I couldn't believe how clear it was coming out.

    AG No.3 Bohemian Pils

Given that this beer style is pretty specific, espcially regarding the hops, i can't really see that they'd not say what the AAs are out of secrecy. Probably they just couldn't be bothered. loss of what, efficiency or water usage? I think some of the efficiency will have been down to the...

    AG No.3 Bohemian Pils

The other hop additions were 55g @ 30min, 25g @ 10min and 25g @ shutdown. It's now cooling. All seemed to go well. The wort OG was 1.053, which on the 15L I got from the boil, gives me an efficiency of about 65%. This is a little disappointing given my nice slow sparge. But it's my first...

    AG No.3 Bohemian Pils

I've drained and weighed the mash. After I'd got down to a gravity of 1.04 I stopped sparging. I then drained 6L from the tun and the mash weighed 8kg. Minus the 4kg of the grain leaves me with a total of 10L water remaining. So Given that I started with 30L and got 15L of wort, that's 5L I lost...

So, first hop addition at 60min is 45g. And I'm very impressed that they come in a very neat teabag, so no **** to filter out.

    AG No.3 Bohemian Pils

Jesus. Massive and fast boilover. Thankfully I managed to pull the plug just before it got covered in hot beer and would have tripped the fuses at the very least. And that is precisely why I'm developing the element covers. Boiling nicely on the one other element now.

    AG No.3 Bohemian Pils

Today is brew day for my Get er brewed Bohemian Pilsner kit. They annoyingly don't say what any of the amounts of the ingredients are, which seems kind of fundamental.... It's a lovely day so I thought I'd spare the kitchen and brew in the garden. This is the debut for my new mash tun...
