a bit skint but want to do a brew this weekend

Thanks BrewStew I will go by taste as you say... When you say rack it, do you mean in to my pressure barrel or in to a second FV? The cider is giving off a faint eggy smell at the moment - is this normal or do I need to add some citric acid?

a bit skint but want to do a brew this weekend

There is an offer on in Tesco at the moment for 8 litres of pure apple juice from concentrate for £4. Anyway, I bought 24 litres and it is now burbling away like mad in the dining room. Question - the OG was 1050 and I want to end up with medium dry - so I am guessing 1005? I've checked today...

a bit skint but want to do a brew this weekend

Can you use any old cartons of apple juice to do this? Not keen on the idea of anything over 6% - so if it went from 1050 to, say, 1005 that would be semi dry and about 5.5% - is that right? I'm going to have a go at this - sounds like an easy one to do. How long will it take to ferment and...

I've got some Black Pearl on the go as well - let me know how yours turns out (mine has been fermenting since Friday and was down to 1020 yesterday).

My beer is okay, but it all tastes the same...

No danger of me not liking beer! ;) Commercial-wise I'd normally go for something nice in bottles like Batemans, Highgate, O'Hanlons, Sierra Nevada, Timothy Taylors or at a push Newcastle Brown. I tend to avoid anything in a can and don't see the point in stuff like Fosters, Stella, Carling...

My beer is okay, but it all tastes the same...

Okay cheers - I'll give it a go. How much bleach do you use? A few drops?

My beer is okay, but it all tastes the same...

Yep - sounds most likely as I was assuming it was the sterliser that was doing it even though I had rinsed it thoroughly. If I'm still picking up that bleach like taste then it coming from poor quality water sounds like a good assumption. I'll use a campden tablet next time - fingers crossed...

My beer is okay, but it all tastes the same...

It's not really TCP, but it is very bitter and sticks at the back of your throat. I've not used any sugar as they've all been 3kg all malt kits and I've primed with spray malt when they have gone in to the barrels and bottles. I've not de-chlorinated the water. Our local water is pretty dire...

My beer is okay, but it all tastes the same...

Just wondered if anyone else knows why this is... Over the past year I have brewed the following kits: Brupaks Colne Bitter Brupaks IPA Woodefordes Great Eastern Muntons Smugglers *2 Woodfordes Wherry Milestone Black Pearl Milestone Crusader All these kits have dropped bright and been fine -...

Bottling my brew - wine bottles any good?

Hi - Been reading this website with interest for a while but this is my first time to post... Just read the thread and I have a question. I bottled some Woodfordes Wherry at the weekend for the first time (usually use a pressure barrel) using a heaped teaspoon of spray malt per litre (i.e. 23...
