I had a niggling doubt in my head that I'd done something wrong too...I checked...I'd put the gas on the dip tube side. I should have just swapped the gas as they're the same and labelled the keg but as I decided RED =GAS best to swap it and carry on as planned.
Rushing around coz the fridge is being delivered!!

I've done that before. I saw a tip on something to get a paint marker pen and mark all my kegs. Helps when you are in a rush.
 
Be an idea to save rookie errors to have the gas in pipe to small to fit on the dip tube. And...the beer only came up the gas line coz I had fixed the dip tube to it by mistake. It wouldn't have vented any beer otherwise as the gas dip is well clear of the beer.
Need to write myself a check list I think until I get more routine with it all.
I'd have been knackered without that check valve though for sure!
