I think the Romans used wood and water. Drilled a hole, pushed a wooden wedge in then poured water on the wedge. It soaked up the water, expanded and split the stone along it's grain.

Obviously the aliens told them how to do it.

Do we know why the monoliths were made ?

Splitting along the grain would not give perfect 90 degrees corners etc.
