Yeah, a cynical marketing ploy...and that's coming from someone who works in marketing!
Have no issue with re-interpretation of an older car, even if its in EV form, but it has to have some level of recognisable attributes linking it to the original. BMW have done this very very well with the Mini I think even though the new BMW mini is massive compared to the original but they've managed well to give you that feeling of a linkage back to the original mini.
