Yeah, a cynical marketing ploy...and that's coming from someone who works in marketing!
Have no issue with re-interpretation of an older car, even if its in EV form, but it has to have some level of recognisable attributes linking it to the original. BMW have done this very very well with the Mini I think even though the new BMW mini is massive compared to the original but they've managed well to give you that feeling of a linkage back to the original mini.

Yeah I guess Ford has form...they did a decent job in the early 2000's with the new GT40, but the latest GT40, as great a car as I'm sure it is, doesn't bear much resemblance to the orginal in terms of aesthetics or the ethos of the car. And the new LR Defender couldn't be further removed form the ethos of the original Defender.
Coming at it from a marketing angle it is all about brand..that is where the true value of any product lies so by hoiking the brand onto as many things as they can they can keep milking it and people will keep putting their hands in their pockets. The irony is that Ford could have taken the Focus and made a nice little Coupe out of it and called it a Capri and it would have sold well, no idea why they've stuck the brand on a hulking boxy SUV.

Thanks for the 2CEV - interesting - presumably nobody interested in designing a modern day version. Mine had a 16 HP engine ....
The thing is, I think the Chinese will bring out a low cost electric people's car soon and clean up because normal people need basic reliable no frills transport.
All the current manufacturers are pumping out overly complex and expensive vehicles, as they can only sell them based on 'tech' and shiny.
Interest rate rises will also show how dodgy the car finance deals are too.
I think Mileage will be the issue on cheap models alright for daily commutes but days out may be a issue depending on charging points on the journey plus time to charge if not at the destination.
I have seen a couple of second hand electric cars for £12k ish but they only do just over 100 miles and I guess that was when new mileage figures so may be below that

VW (and others) have City Cars coming that will break the 20k mark.
