Alcohol has major effect on the body. Sleep is one of the biggest effects for me. I wear a sports watch which I use for running but it also tracks sleep. For example I had a bottle of red wine last night, My watch pinged this morning to say I had poor sleep and that I should use today as a recovery day. Basically don't exercise. If I run the day after drinking My heart rate is a lot higher as well.
The problem is I really enjoy having a beer and socialising. So I try and get a balance, at the minute it's a pint for every mile I run 😄

Yes and equally when your unwell, i've had (still going 🤢) a high temperature and muscle aches since Tuesday my sleep scores have been terrible as i've been hot/cold all night.

Good luck with your next ultra-marathon😂

I was running really well before Christmas, chest infection wrecked me. I am very rarely sick but I needed two antibiotics to help me. Had a cough for months. I am only starting to feel myself. When I exercised I would burn up a few hours later. Basically My body telling me to calm down.
Running is great for Me it helps me mentally as well as physically. I love any sport that is out doors

At our age these things are no joke. ;)

Sleep is something I've not managed in any great success for as long as I can remember.

Check out the Headspace app. It won’t do anything for work pressures or joint pains. It does help you take anything from 5 to 30 minutes out of your day to devote to your own mental health. It’s totally evidence based and the daily sleepcast’s are very effective.

Mrs70 had one hip done aged 42, it’s now playing up and the other one is banjaxed. Headspace, occasionally combined with strong painkillers, have shortened the long nights for her.

Second that @Clint Mrs Hudd does Headspace and it works for her.

Like you though, I need to do exercise for my mental and physical health, I do around 50 miles on the bike and try to get one or two (usually one) runs in a week.
I aim for 4 days a week, 5 is best but time is hard to come by. Drink is also a depressant, I could not do the stuff I used to get up too.
If I drink too much My thought process is all over the place.

I know alcohol is ultimately a depressant, but in moderation it can be a fantastic mood enhancer when with family and friends… however I find it incredibly easy to think “I’m having so much fun - so clearly if I have another drink, I’ll have even more fun” … but that often doesn’t end well 😂

Jeez that sounds nasty. Especially if you’re used to exercising as part of your life, to find you can’t do it for a while must have been pretty tough

Exactly.
I’m positive that if I didn’t drink I would have nailed my handstand a year ago and would be well on the way on my muscle-up journey.
As it is, I’m think I’m happier now, slightly tipsy and still can’t do a handstand without a helper🤣

I have always tried to stay in the recommended unit allowance for the week but for a long time there always seems to be an excuse for that extra beer - late kick off football, 6 nations, wife heading to bed early so I grab another beer. Going forward I am going to aim for 3 pints a week, well I say pints but most of my glasses are 440ml. Also add a week off each month.

Hahaha I read that completely wrong, thought you meant that 'without' drink you wouldn't have nailed you handstand, as in that it gave you Dutch courage or something! 🤣

3 pints a week would be tough, I would probably save My 3 pints a week and have one night a month.

I find I often have too much stuff going around in my head at once. A beer or 3 helps to dampen down a lot of the cr4p buzzing around. @pilgrimhudd cycling is the other thing that helps.
