evening all.

can anyone out ther tell me the AV of youngs you brew bitter, i brought the stater pack from wilkinsons just to get to grips with brewing. someone told me it was about 3.5% and someone else said it was 3%. i made it with 1 kilo of normal everyday sugar.

Hi Dav,

Cant tell u the AV but did you do an SG if so do a FV at the end and you'll know for sure...G

errr... I think there's a bit of a mix up here. SG is Specific Gravity. OG (original gravity) is what the SG measures as your wort hits the FV (Fermenting Vessel) before fermenting has commenced. FG (final gravity) is what the SG measures after your yeast has done all it can do to convert sugar to alcohol (fermenting). Therefore, the difference between OG and FG can tell you what percentage alcohol (ABV) you have, by the means of a simple equation, or by hitting the 'calculators' tab at the top left of the homepage banner.

Some people seem to use SG as starting gravity which annoys/confuses me.

Happy with either. I think the confusion came when FV was used instead of FG. :thumb:

Starting gravity (SG) and finishing gravity (FG)...keeps it simple IMO
Not if you've been brought up on a diet of SG meaning specific gravity. Then it's confusing. For me. Hence my personal preference to use OG.

Hear hear!

I thought FG was F*ckin' Gravity as in "Why has my beer stopped fermenting at that high F*ckin' Gravity?"

Nowt wrong with personal preference, it would be pretty boring if we were all the same, despite what you hear from Europe
Same goes for teaching old dogs new tricks...as I'm learning the hard way, converting kg to pounds
