Take the lid off. Tie a clean teatowel over the top with a bit of string. Nothing's going to infect your beer through that crust- it's like open fermentation. A blow-off tube will just clog.
Wait till it all settles down, scrape off the crust of yeast and replace the lid. Everything's going spiffingly!

You could try a blow off tube at least then it will go into the container and you can empty it regularly.

Thanks Chippy - while the lid's been off in order to clear up a bit, the head's collapsed right back down. I've put the lid back on loosely and I'm keeping an eye on it

Cheers - I've never seen a Krausen like it before: like something from Quatermass and the Pit.

Thanks for the help everyone - greatly appreciated athumb..
I tried a blow-off tube, but the foam was coming out at the rate of about a pint a minute (I kid you not) so I went with @Clarence suggestion of a clean tea towel tied over the top - perfect.
Somewhat relieved this morning to find no further drama; although the garage does smell pretty strongly of... banana...
