I have returned to brewing after a few years gap, I found an old Geordie bitter whilst moving house so thought I would give it a go. It was past its best before so I ditched the kit yeast and used gervin ale yeast. All fermented ok, although took a while most likely due to the temp of around 18c. Cold crashed for a few days, was nice and clear so kegged.

Had a sample tonight and it just tasted like a yeasty disappointment. Reminded me of why I gave up brewing before. Any tips on why it tastes so yeasty as it looks clear.

How far out of date was it? I brewed a load of kits that were out of date by 1 or 2 years and they didn't taste yeasty but there was an overarching taste through all of them that I can't quite describe as anything other than 'homebrewwwey' which for different people might mean different things. So your yeasty might be my twangy (don't think that'll become a Sondheim number for Fred and Ginger). If I were forced to make a choice I'd say it was the kit being old - and looking at kit dates when they're new the expiry date is at least 18 months ahead, so mine would have been 3 to 4 years since manufacture.
 
You may just need to give it time (the homebrewers best friend!) to improve. Kits are notorious for the twang.
 
Yesh, the kit was about 3 years out of date, maybe I am expecting too much. Probably being impatient too, I treated myself to a cornie so am eager to give it a try. Although when I drank what was in the trial jar it tasted ok, maybe its because more sediment has settled to the bottom of the keg. I will give it some more time.
