Having mainly used packet yeast for my brews, my last brew a Yorkshire bitter is done fermenting. I've used Wyeast 1469 West Yorkshire Ale yeast and plan on saving the yeast cake/yeast from it to use at a later date.

I've got some 1 litre kilner type jars and bottles and watched a few videos and read about saving yeast. I plan on adding cooled boiled water to the yeast cake after I've bottled the beer and then transfer the liquid/sludge into said bottles and jars, let it sit so the layers are seen then pour off the liquid on the top and refill with fresh cooled boiled water and repeat the process.

Obviously everything will be sanitised and clean, any tips or things I've missed? Once collected can the saved yeast be poured straight into another brew or will i have to make a starter? Ill probably reuse it within a month. if it was straight away Id just pour the fresh wort on top of the cake.

Cheers

Just from another tip (I forget who ), no need to wash, just put the slurry into a bottle jar and make your starters from that. It saves a step and from his last post the yeast has lasted 6 months. I've a S04 and S33 from my last 2 brews and I've made a S04 starter for my next brew.

Cheers for the tip :) The no washing makes sense, Ill probably do that with this brew as I transferred minimal trub, from the GrainFather. If was doing it with a BIAB brew that I no chilled i would wash the yeast as there is a good litre or 2 of trub using that method.

It makes sense although I'm new to it also. There's less chance of spoiling and you get more yeast. You also only need a few cells to spark growth again and even if you don't have a lot, you can get a good starter with time.

It does, I just need to pull my finger and wallet out and make stir plate!
