Having had a snoop around at various cider and champagne yeasts I see that many come in a 5g pack that state suitable for 4.5 to 23l.

If I want to start a test gallon of tc. Do I ( should I ) throw the whole pack in anyway or can I use a 5th of it ( being a tight git ) and save the rest for further 1 gal batches?

Was wondering similar myself.

Just be aware there is a certain type of cider yeast available that has an additional sweetener in it (non fermentable), if you used a whole sachet of that in a 1 gal batch I think the end result would be overly sweet.

For other types though I think I'd try to get 2 or 3 gallon batches out of a pack. Splitting it five ways might be a bit too much. You could lob the whole pack in but as you've said it's quite wasteful.

The experts will confirm shortly I'm sure!

If I know I'm going to be doing another 1gal batch which uses the same type of yeast the same week I just do half a packet in each as opened yeast doesn't keep or shouldn't be kept.

Yeah, i go with 1/2 a packet per gallon in cider yeast that has sweetner in it.

There is a guy in a video on youtube was posted on here, can't find it, used a 5g pack for 2 years and lots of batches, he used a few grains and made a starter for each batch. I use four or five batches from each pack, depends on how much comes out of the pack when I sprinkle it into dj.

So absolutely no problem in splitting a pack across 5 one gallon djs? Seal the pack and pop in the fridge perhaps?

Keep dry I suggest, I always find that the opening gets condensation and the yeast doesn't last in the fridge.
