Started a new yeast culture today using a pint of Pedigree brought home as a carry out.
Got fed up boiling water and dried Pale Malt and then waiting for it to cool.
This time I just put 10oz of Pale Malt in dry form into the bottom of a DJ and poured the Pedigree on top.
Gave it a vigorous shake and swill round and then topped up to 2 ltrs with filtered rainwater.
Put in a cotton wool plug, a few more shakes and swirls and put on kitchen work top (I live here as well).
The malt had completely lost any lumps.
Ever time I walk by or think of it I will remove the cotton wool plug, remove any CO2 by blowing into the DJ, give it a shake and a swirl and replace the cotton wool bung.
Should take about 10 days to grow a decent culture, then it will be acid washed and put in the freezer along with the Abbot, Land Lord and Bass cultures.
I used one of the Bass cultures in my latest brew and it fired up in a few hours without a starter.
Of course the proof of the pudding will tell it’s own storey, but I’m hoping this will be a cheap source of good yeast!

I'd love to brew a big batch of old speckled hen and they use a unique yeast. Does that technique work on all bottled ales??

It will only work on bottle conditioned ales, or ales that haven't had the yeast filtered out of them. Even then, you have no guarantee that the beer wasn't filtered before hand and then a non-primary strain of yeast used to do the conditioning.

Best bet is a pint of cask from the pub. Preferably from the end of the cask.

hmm, looks like I may have to go out and do some "research" to find o s h on draught in nottingham. Failing that I could always keep some sterilsed containers in the van incase I do come across some. Thanks

I would have thought your pedigree strain, is the exact same strain as the Bass strain you used the other day EV, being as both beers are brewed in the same brewery, in burton, I would suspect they are both brewed with marstons burton union yeast.

All the bass purists I know say that Bass doesn't taste the same as it used to, now that marstons brew it, therefore I would suspect different yeast as a starter.

I do know that Bass yeast strain is still used daily to brew bitters and IPA but not to brew bass.
