Xmas Traditions?

Hi Folks

As it's almost Christmas...myself and half the population of Orkney are getting geared up for our Local Tradition of the Ba' which is usually played on Xmas Day and New Years Day (although this year will be Boxing Day and the 2nd Jan as it is never played on a Sunday)

Some of you may be aware of it, some may not.....I thought I would share a bit of info on it and ask what /if any of you have other local traditions?

This is a video explaining a bit about the madness, with some video footage - Unfortunately....this shows an Uppie Win and being a Staunch Doonie myself...this does not bode well....we are more than set for 'The Shorie Boys' to bring it home this year :)

I shall be spending both ba' days firmly fixed in the street with my trusty hip flask full of homemade port to keep me warm!! :)

Christmas tradition - the men in the house go down the pub for a beer or two, from about midday till about 2pm whilst the women cook the meal, but usually the women drink red wine, and get more pissed than us blokes, and lunch then isn't served till about 4. :whistle:

Not really xmas i know but i used to live in Maldon, Essex where on new year they have The Maldon mud race which involves wading through almost waist deep mud at some points, across the river and back again and finishing at the pub on the quay.
Have done the course myself but only when it was summer, didn't fancy it in winter temperatures! But they get quite alot of people doing it and is so popular now that people travel from miles away to do it, nutters :shock:

In the late 80's I went to Glasgow Tech with a lad from Orkney and he told us all about it. I believe his dad was a captain one year although I cannot remember if he was an Uppie or a Doonie. His name was Stuart Adams - you may know the family.

My only tradition is that New Years day is usually a brewday. I am planning a Belgian Tripel this year.

Done it myself, I use to live in Maylandsea, so we had plenty of mud to practice in.

Our's is fairly simple, rone the same every year we've been together,.

I get up when I want, except on wednesday when I get rudely awakened by the dustman. Oh wait.

Get up. Make a coffee while sitting in my pants. I then attempt to make the stuffing. After swearing and mopping up the blood from the hand blender I then stuff the bird. When I've finished that, I get back out of bed and back to the kitchen and put the pigsmeat, onion and breadcrumbs mixture in a goose. When that's done, I go for a shower. Then I remember to turn the oven on and start again.

At some point, She'll get out of bed. I then make more tea and open the presents. Then I do more stuff for the meal. Then we have an argument about me going to the pub instead of waiting for her - maybe if she got up before 1pm we wouldn't argue about it - then sit in the pub. Then I spend the next 4 hours in the pub, occasionally running home to baste the bird, or put some fat over the goose. After five hours, we get thrown out of the pub. Then we come home, make the gravy. When the gravy is done, I stick the whole lot of the meal in the bin because the cat's been at it.

When all that's done, we get a pizza out of the freezer and watch Dr Who. After that, we remember to turn the oven back on. When I've woken up again, I'll get the burnt remains of the pizza out of the oven, swear at the cat and then drink beer until I either

a) Puke
b) Pass out
c) Puke and pass out.

Not sure what I do after that. Except post tall tales on the internet.

I love christmas me!
