According to the info over there (link) the sort of (imported) lager that was popular in the UK back in the late 19th C was ...

The first commercial imports of Lager arrived in the UK in 1868 . Bottom-fermenting beer, mostly in the form of Vienna Lager or Mïnchener quickly gained a toehold in the British market.

... so chances are the Wrexham Lager brewed back then would have been a Vienna or Muncher (Munich Helles) ... both of which are quite sweet, as you describe the Wrexham, but the dark lager aspect of the story would point more towards a Vienna which are quite often brewed dark ... in fact nowadays are most often brewed dark, by Mexicans

Anyways, why not just start off with a recipe for a Vienna Lager (suggestions for formulating one can be gleaned over there (link) ) and see how close that gets you, and then tweak from there

This might be heresy but I never thought much of Wrexham lager a bit like Harp but better than Grunhaller which was piss. I grew up in Northwich which was 100% Greenall Whitley crap beer we had to go to Chester for Wrexham lager.

It was alright I suppose....I'd drink it as there wasn't much else on offer locally...that Marstens stuff was dreadful..

I lived in the Llangollen and then Chirk Bank up to the mid 70's and came across Wrexham Lager on my travels early in my pubbing career. My recollection is that it was OK compared with other lagers I came across at the time.

My mother came from Cefn Mawr and I spent every summer holiday around Cefn, Llan and Chirk and the Garth mountains but a bit young to drink Wrexham lager

One of my brothers used to knock around with a lad from The Cefn at that time, known as "Smiley". Smiley was a joiner as I recall. A good friend at the time lived in Trevor and we used to drink in the Rockmans Arms in the Garth.
