I seem to be on the last leg of building my AG brewery setup, but have now got to the point of deciding on a wort chiller My kettle is a big 60L converted FV, and none of the ebay jobs I can see look quite right. I have found one that will custom make what you want, but I am not sure want to ask him for exactly.

I am wondering how far up the coils should come, as I chose the 60L size to prevent boil overs rather than brew giant batches.

I do know that I will need a 160mm max OD for the chiller as its a bit awkward the way I have done the drain, and I would like it resting on the bottom rather than hooked over the side.

Any help please?

first off as long as u dont try bending short lengths of 10 or 8mm tube, and use either fittings or tube benders to do tight angles its a doddle to make your own, the tube arrives in a coil to start with ;).

Secondly However, do u have a recirculation pump fitted to move the hot wort over the chilling coil? if not you may find you need to stand and stir it so the coil dosen't just sit in a cold pocket of wort.

with my 23-25l brewkit and simple coil chiller this took 25mins at least, when upgrading to a larger volume i didnt fancy standing there for an hour stirring so i looked at other options and went straight pipe cfc for the easy cleaning.

some more complex multi coil chillers with split feeds have been proven more efficient, and my 10m of 10mm tube job may have been worse than others.but the temp of the output was noticeably much hotter when i stirred the hot water over the coil, so it did work ;)......

How long would you like your chilling procedure to take, if relatively fast i dont thing a simple coil chiller will be the best option.

When you mentioned recirculating pump, I got the idea of pumping the wort via the kettle tap through a FPHE with a solar pump. I Don't have a pump yet so am poking around for one.

I probably could make up the coils ok, but then like you say, would want a stirrer as well. And if I want to go bigger it would scale up better with avoiding making new coils.

Getting the temp down fast would be nice, as am I am thinking about doing Parti-Gyle brewing and need to do boils in succession.

How strange, I have recently been emailling this seller about him making a custom immersion cooler with a whirlpool generating pipe attached which he is willing to make at small cost. He says he's going to start making and selling these in the next couple of months too.
I can vouch for how helpful he has been so far to me so if you are unsure pop him an email and i'm sure he'll assist.
