My biggest "Whoopsie?" ...

... was telling a neighbour how inexpensive home-brewed beer was.

He didn't seem to realise that "inexpensive" didn't mean "free" and I couldn't get rid of him.

I finally brewed an extra strong ABV bitter just for him ...

... and his wife stopped him coming round after he used her airing cupboard instead of the bathroom.:whistle:

Result! :thumb::thumb::thumb:

Back in the 80's me and a mate made some Dandelion wine.
The instructions said to use the yellow petals.
We cut corners and just lobbed the whole heads in.

Man on man, that stuff was toxic.
My mate at the time worked at a chemical plant and put toxic stickers on some of the bottles.
Needless to say, it all went down the drain.

Apart from one bottle, which my dad still has in the garage.
He says that it might have mellowed after 30 years.

OK dad you try it first.

I've had a whisk dismantle itself into a brew just before pitching. I gave it about 2 strokes and was left holding the handle. The inside of that thing really wasn't clean either. Managed to get away with it though and will sup a few of the resulting bitter tonight. I chucked loads of yeast in so they probably out grew any nasties that got in there.

Did my first little ag brew last night mind and iI'd be here all day writing all the whoopsie moments in that!

Dan.
If my first one was anything to go on, I'm surprised it turned out at all.
It was a catalogue of errors from the very start.
The beer turned out fine in the end though, to the point, i drunk it so fast, i've nothing left to drink.

I have always thought that if they used to make beer in the back garden or lane during the middle ages then anything is possible. The life expectancy then was a tad lower than now though!

One of mine was when i was trying to make my degassing wand, i got sick of waiting for the hot water to heat the plastic coat hanger enough to allow me to bend it without it snapping, i decided heating it using the gas hob would be a great idea and it worked, Mrs Tea gave me a right bollocking when she got home as she said the house stunk of burning plastic.

Plugging in and turning on a plastic boil kettle with no liquor in, made me go gas.

Oh....and trying to lift 25li of boiling wort after drinking a few pints resulted in a major trip to casualty and 1 month of work. (wont be doing that again)

Tried it with 40 litres of cooled wort from floor to a kitchen bench, only once though as my back said never again!!

Cheers for the support mate! Got my second one boiling at the mo which seems to be going a bit better. It's the kind of thing where no matter how much you read and think about it you won't really uncover the problems until you actually do it. Enjoying it though that's the main thing. Just want to get a few bottles made to see if I think it's worth the effort.

Boiling on my hob a year or so ago.. I used a clothes peg to help keep the grain bag on my FV when I sparged.. I also put foil around the hob to help keep some of the mess off it.. unbeknown to me I had somehow got a clothes peg underneath and it melted onto the hob and the worktop. Fortunately SWMBO was out and I was able to use a sharp knife to scalp it away.. it def left the work top singed so I got some bleach and bleached the stain. I don't know how I did it but it is very hard to spot....

About a month later she spotted it and asked if I knew how that got there.. I just said it was probably when we was cooking with the wok on the burner a few nights before

On one of my Extract brews, trying to emulate Old Speckled Hen.

I was using some brewing software for the first time.
After using 80G of (mainly weak) hops for the German Weissen beer I had been brewing previously and not fully understanding hops at that time.

I went and chucked 80g of Challenger into my 5 Gallon brew of Old Speckled Hen Clone.

Wow! It was Hoppy and did not taste like OSH.

Did you write the recipe down

I once collected 30 odd nice shaped wine bottles, removed the screw caps and aluminium tanper seals, soaked em in water for a few days, scraped all the labels off, washed em in hot water then rinsed them with boiling, then found out the openings were too small for my corks to fit!

boiling up my hop bags on the stove to get them ready for use... forgot about them and boiled the pan dry... first thing i knew of it was the smell of burning muslin cloth in the house... i was soon back to ebay to order some more..
