I nearly had a guess after line 2 as I had 4 letters, but I'm glad I didn't because the word ended up being different to the one I was gonna guess.

I rather suspect you and I made the same guess at line 3, which was on reflection a far more uncommon or unlikely word than the eventual one!

I definitely have used my third guess more. I don't recall ever having used to actual answer. In the usage chart from Google books, blue is our initial guess and red is the actual answer.
I do think pre NYT you could more reliably use the more common word, now it seems they purposefully go for niche words.
