Winey taste in extract based brew noticed when moving to resting vessel , left too long on yeast ? Even though the yeast has not finished and the gravity is higher than the expected FG ?

Is there any way to rescue this lot , or avoid in future ?

I have had a few kits taste like spirit when they were young, but this mellowed out with time.

Wonder if this is the case here?

When I left one of mine too long on the yeast it had a meaty smell and taste, so I guess that's not your issue.

It could be too fast/warm ferment that has created a bit too much fusel alcohol. I'd let it mature for a while and hope it mellows

Duncs , I think you may be onto it - its a lager yeast by mauribrew abd the ambient temp on the second day topped 20* so it DID race a bit , but then many yeasts do on the second and third days . Since then the room temp has been between 14* and 18* and the bottom ferment has been obvious in the small amount in a half gal DJ that I did so I could watch the action of a true lager yeast working .

Too much of the fusels , long time in the bottle then !
