I got a beverdale shiraz kit last year a gift and was delighted with the result. You tend to hear pretty good reviews of them so that's the brand I'd go for. They're pretty resonable on the price front too

Winebuddy Merlot is cheap and cheerful, Bel Vino aussie red is a decent country wine that is similar to a Merlot, could do with a tad of tweaking to give a tad more body, though. I've never tried the expensive kits though, I see kit wine as a great way to get table wine, for anything posher I go with doing fruit wines, you could get together the stuff to do a fruit wine and give him that as a present a sort of home made kit wine

I did a mondego ultimate Merlot at Christmas and this now tastes great. I have done the Wine buddy which is ok but a bit thin.

With a merlot I am not sure you will gain much from buying the high end kits ?

Some may disagree though :nah:
