Will PET bottles be okay?

I have been using PET fizzy pop bottles for my kit beer - 1 & 2L ones.
I started using 1/2tsp priming sugar per pint as per kit instructions, but ended up with not much in the way of fizz or head.
One of my old books from the 70's says 1tsp per pint, so I used that for my latest kit.
For the flat beers there is usually plenty of give in the plastic of the bottles, but the latest lot there is very little give at all.

I just opened one which has been in the cold for a couple of weeks and there was a good hiss on opening, and it's nice and fizzy.
But I'm a bit paranoid about bottles popping.
Especially since they are stored in the cold and I move them to the warm which will cause expansion.

I read somewhere on this forum that they can withstand very high pressures, which I hope is true.
Have these PET bottles ever been known to explode?
Should I release some pressure so that there is some give in the bottles?

Thanks in advance :thumb:

I'd suggest leaving them at room temperature to carbonate because it's basically fermentation again. Put them in the fridge when you want to drink 'em. They can withstand quite a lot of pressure, just don't get bottling champagne in them :p

No, I carbonated them in my dining room for 2-3 days, then moved them to the loft for storage once the 2nd ferment had stopped and they started to clear.
I haven't got the space to store them at room temp.

PET bottles can withstand about 90psi, so don't worry; champagne is about 60-75psi

That's cool. No need to worry.
The bottles aren't as pressurised as the fizzy pop that comes in them, so I can stop worrying
