Will a CO2 capsule actually carbonate the beer in a barrel?

Silicone sealant is not necessary and would need to be cleaned off for each brew. Lubing seals is good but make sure the lube is compatible. For example, don't use silicone grease with silicone seals - it softens them.

The rubber band 'relief valves' are at least cheap and simple. But should be tested in case the hole gets blocked. If they 'lift' they do reseal themselves which mechanical relief valves sometimes don't.

Why don't you try to sort the barrel out?

Well I've put new seals on it and I suppose hope for the best.
Reading about them on here I've come to the conclusion I could be on a hiding to nothing 😁

The bitter is ready and I was going to barrel it weekend but didn't get chance.
