FA holds talks with Tuchel over England manager job

Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has held talks with the Football Association about becoming the next England manager.

An approach was also made for Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola in the summer to see if had an interest in the England role.

Neither the FA or Manchester City would comment publicly when approached by BBC Sport.

Tuchel left Bayern Munich in May, despite still having a year to run on his contract, as the German giants failed to win the Bundesliga title for the first time since 2011-12.

He has also previously managed Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Paris St-Germain.

Tuchel, 51, was Chelsea boss between January 2021 and September 2022 - winning the Champions League, Fifa Club World Cup and Uefa Super Cup before being sacked.

In June, Tuchel ruled himself out of the running to take over at Manchester United - it was understood that he met Red Devils co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe in France.

If appointed, Tuchel would become the third non-British permanent manager of the England men's team after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

Tuchel has been pretty much confirmed now so may as well get behind him.....

Until he's lost a few games anyway 😁

I wanted Pep as I don't think we have an English manager that would turn us into Cup winners, I will wait and see how Tommy gets on.

I don't follow other teams so haven't a clue how good or bad the guy is but according to today's 5live phone in he seems to have a good reputation and is liked by the players who have played for him, I don't know if Klopp was asked and it looks like Pep didn't want the job as I think of the three Tuchel would have been third choice

Why don't we look on the bright side, there's a new competent guy in the job, let him get on with the job, without his every word, move and decision being analysed to death. What counts in the end is can the team complete the last mile when it matters most.

Unfortunately there will be lots of England fans who didn't want a foreign manger hoping he will be gone in 18 months they will be all over the 606 and 5 live etc if he doesn't do well in his first few games..

And of course we all need to know if he'll be singing God save the king........

I did wonder about that when i heard he had got the job.

Did Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello sing god save the Queen?

Good old Google -

Eriksson said he never truly "mastered" the national anthem but the late Swede did attempt to sing it before matches during his time in charge of England, Italian Fabio Capello decided against doing so.

Seem to remember Sven miming the words, Fabio would have had no chance even if he'd wanted too!
