Hi!

Oh No! Well, I brewed a Tom Caxton's Real Ale last night and used White Labs California Ale (WLP001) yeast to get the job done.

BUT!

I put the heat belt on it at 10pm last night and then forgot to switch it on! I have the heating at 17C overnight, so it didn't get any colder than that. Now I have the belt on, will it get going or will I have put the yeast to sleep? Any advice/reassurances/tuts through clenched teeth gratefully received!

Don't worry about it, at 17C the yeast might be a bit slow bit it will still be fine. I'd be more concerned with the brew belt getting the beer to hot, for that yeast you really want to be above 22C.

They'll be fine.

If your FV is sealed with an airlock in place, just rock it gently from side to side for a few seconds to get the little divvels up into suspension. Actually, if they've not really got going at this stage, you can give them a really good stir to aerate because they will still be in their 'lag' stage.

It's a variation on 'double dropping'.

Thanks guys! The belt is just above the the middle of the FV, which in the past has given about 21.5C in the centre of he liquid with an ambient temp of 19C in the dining (brewing!) room. I will watch it to make sure I don't overheat it.

I am really looking forward to trying the results! Last time I brewed this, some pikey had nicked the hop sachet, but this time I am on for a winner I hope! First time with this yeast too.

The lid is popping, so there is certainly gas being produced which is a good sign. I'll let you know how it turns out.
