My saison has been cold crashing since Wednesday and I just went to check before bottling and there is a white growth on top. It feels powdery when I lift some out. What is it? Brew smells fine and I should be able to remove it.

Good thread, what does it mean?

Am I ok to bottle and drink?

It's not conclusive with relation to your beer. So don't chuck it, it could well be fine. Bottle it, and see how it goes. And let us know, interesting situation. :thumb:

I had the same mold type stuff on a brew early on in the year, i was talking to MM about it and he convinced me to go ahead and bottle which i did all was good in my case, id say leave a few liters behind more than normal to avoid getting any in bottles, :thumb:

I would take the pellicle off before bottling, and allow time for the beer to settle - cold crash and gelatine might be a good idea, if you can.

I skimmed with a sieve which got most of it off. Just racked into the bottling bucket from below, just avoiding the trub. A few white flakes went into the bucket though. Just put bottling bucket out in the cold to settle, may bottle later tonight or tomorrow.

Dont want to freak you out or anything but I'd be worried about the " few white flakes" that got into the bottling bucket as potentially you've now transferred the pellicle from the FV to the bottling bucket which will now grow in the bottles during condtioning time, rather than leaving it behind in the FV had you racked from below and left behind a bit extra beer than you normally would do

There was nothing I could do, the force of the suction was pulling bits from the top.

30 x 500ml bottles and 3 x 660ml potentially wasted.

I think it'll be ok too. That white stuff has been in contact with the brew all along. I could be wrong but I have read about people brewing beers that got a pellicle and they've been fine.
