Hi,

My brew has just finished primary fermentation and I transferred it to the barrel on NY eve. Along with the recommended amount of sugar I added finings to the brew as suggested by the home brew shop. Can anyone confirm that this is correct as I'm now suspicious it might not be? Should I have transferred the brew to a second bin and added the finings there before barrelling or is this a redundant step?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Cheers,

Jon

Each time i have used finings i added them at the barreling stage and that always worked ok for me. At the moment i have to store my barrels outdoors so it could just be the pure cold clearing my beers out so well.

Thanks. I've not used finings before so it's good to know I've not messed things up. I was worried the finings might kill the yeast - to be honest I'm not sure how they work.

Cheers,

Jon

I think it is something to do with the fining particles statically attracting them selfs to the dead yeast particles helping them sink to the bottom faster.
