im guessing i will need extra stuff ?

could anyone help with some instruction :)

many thanks d

The two can kits are generally of better quality and as they have two cans of malt extract they require no extra fermentables (sugar).

If you already have all the equipment, the only extra "ingredients" you will need for a one can kit is 1kg of either household sugar, brewing sugar or beer kit enhancer.

great thanks chaps , is it worth going for the posh suger ? is it much more expensive ?

and do i add it at the same point i put the tin in ?

cheers for reply :)

You can use 1kg of normal sugar but personally for that kit i'd add something like 500grams of light/medium spray malt and 500grams brewing sugar. Using normal sugar will make it a bit stronger but will taste a bit thin, addind spraymalt will add body and mouth feel to the beer.
The good thing about 1 can kits its that it allows you to tinker and try different combinations of malt and sugar, i've done some nice brews with 1 can kits but in general for ales/bitter 2 can kits are alot better

Toastie i made this very same kit last week. As it was cheap i tinkered with it. I added 500grm of medium spray malt, 2 jars of Holland & Barrett malt extract & 1 tin of Tate & Lyle golden syrup, & short brewed it to 4 gallon. The SG was quite high 1060, so it should be a strong beer. Will let you know how it goes.

when you say stronger do you mean the flavour or the % ?

thanks for advise :)

cheers hong , thats i bit complicated for second go but mite have a little tinker :), do you mix it all at the start with the hot water ?

and short brew ? is that where you dont put as much water in , does the work for making it strong ? i do like a strong pint :)

yeah instead of brewing 23 litres i usually brew to 19 or 20 so that it fits in my cornie keg.

yeah pour the tin of extract in then 2 or 3 pints of boiling water, give a good stir, add sugar or spraymalt, add hot or boiling water to tin of extract to rinse out the rest of the malt extract and stir, pick up with oven gloves as it will melt the skin off of your hands, stir again, then top up with cold water.

nice one thanks , i want to do it now but in a week i wont have anywhere to put it , i need another keg asap :)

quite a bit really, IMO kits can taste a bit watery and not very 'beery', but by shortening the brew length and using spraymalt instead of normal sugar you are improving it by about 50%. if you want to do the full 23 litres then batter in, it will still be drinkable, mainly i brew short is so it fits in the leg and i dont have to bother bottling anything else!

cheers , il give is a go with this one if i can get the stuff

i really really want to get on and do it , i need so much stuff i can do one a week and drink one a week :)

if your going to buy spraymalt then buy it in bulk, you'll pay about a fiver for the malt and about 3 or 4 quid delivery on ebay for 500 grams, click on the homebrew company link at the top and buy 3KG of it for £13.i think the delivery is £6.95 but its still cheaper in the long run

cool , il pop in my local brew shop and see what he can do to try and save some postage , iv really got to stop spending money though
