Im new to all this and would like to try a lager homebrew to begin with, any ideas what is best to use for a newbie and also how long to brew if for, etc, etc. :
It all depends. I would recomend an ale or a stout over a lager because generally it is easier to get a good result with minimal effort. Lager, proper lager, needs temperature control and long fermentation times. Were talking 1 month at 12C and then 2 months at 2C. Ale can have 2 weeks at 20C and then bottle, much easier!
I think you have 2 choices. Coopers Mexican Cervaza which needs to ferment at around 20c and will be ready to drink 4 weeks after bottling. Or Coopers European, which needs to ferment at around 12-15c and needs 12 weeks in the bottle before it'd ready. I did both and they both went down well with lager drinkers although the Euro probably edged it.
being a realtive newbie myself i would recommend the coopers lagers kits - mexican cerveca / australian / canadian blonde.
the european pilsner requires a little more careful temp control - i'd love to brew it but can't think of anywhere in or around my house that maintains 12C whereas my airing cupboard maintains a nice 22-24C, just perfect for the other coopers kits
Agreed, any of the coopers kits. My first was Canadian blonde, it uses an ale yeast as far as I know which performs really well. It could be ready for bottling within 2 weeks and ready to drink not long after
