Recently decided to get back into homebrew after a good few years out - going through my old kit I'm turning up odd packets of yeast from five or six years ago.

Don't want to bother really with trying to ferment with this old yeast, but is there anything I can do with it that might be useful? It's just pennies worth in the grand scheme of things, but figured I may as well see if it can be put to use somewhere else - and then the pennies can go on new gear or something :)

Any thoughts?

chuck it in the boil at flame out to use as nutrient.

Yeasts go on for ever, we are using strains that in some cases are very old. These are packet yeasts so were dried and stored accordingly.

Rather than just throw them out, I'd set up a brew and make a starter from DME or some of the wart from your brew, organise for this starter to have an SG of between 1020 - 1040 and put your dried yeast into it. Close the top of your bottle with something like cotton wool or some tin foil and let it sit in your drying cupboard for 24 hrs or so. If it is not showing any signs of fermenting then throw it out. If it is working and it smells ok etc... then put it into your brew and let it do its thing.
