50 million tonnes of fruit and veg binned every year because it is not the right shape or colour for supermarket shelves, I thought they had stopped this nonsense.

Some supermarkets do a wonky section.
I was once asked by the wife to pick up some new potatoes from Morrison's and she told me to get the wonky ones. They were more than half the price but unfortunately moat were so badly bruised that they were beginning to rot.

Supermarket at home has a line of 'misfits': irregularly shaped apples, aubergines or bell peppers at 80% of the price. Works for me. Same as the 'best-before'-discounts. Some of those best-before-dates are ridiculous! Pasta, rice, lager...

I used to work for a large root veg grower and packer as the farm manager, so Ive had a good insight in to what really happens.

The below used to be typical for carrots, parsnips but would also apply to spuds , onions and brassicas etc

large proportion of the crop would be standard pre packed bags of carrot / or loose in trays
next down grade (i.e smaller in diameter , a bit wonkey broken would go to 'value pack' Tesco value , smart price etc
over size (carrots can get to 100mm in diameter) would go to food processing , pies, soups etc

the remainder would be sold for livestock feed, cattle love root vegetables.

so actually 'thrown away' is a bit misleading

statistics can be used to manipulate this in more than one way.

I only caught a little of the article on the radio this morning it will be interesting to see what they mean by wasted.

A bag, net or other packaged fruit OR vegetable will ALWAYS have ONE example that will not be quite up to scratch!

I want to meet and do harm to the person that has the job of putting that one bit of "off" produce into each packet ...

... because I'm certain that it isn't an accident! aunsure....

If the bag is to an exact weight, like 1kg, the sorting machine will make these decisions based on individual weights. It used to work this way for biscuits back in the 1980's.

Dunno what the fuss is about. They sell bags of broken biscuits, broken rice etc. I remember bags of chocs called Mis-shapes... jolly nice they were too.

My Aunty Edna used to work for McVities in Stockport.

Apparently they got a letter from a lady who was complaining that the top and bottom biscuits in each packet of biscuits was always broken ...

... so she suggested that McVities eliminated them! aheadbutt
