Yesterday I started a Challenger DmaSh AG recipe i used a small amount of crystal making it a double malt single hop beer...

I used Nottingham yeast for its attenuation and clean character, I racked from my kettle into two Demijohns splitting the batch I pitched at 20C and shook the wort vigorously shoved my airlocks in and left it to do its thing!

Let the weirdness begin!

1. Airlock activity after 1hr
2. Yeast looks like scrambled egg floating at the bottom of one demijohn... the wort is nearly cleared???? Plenty of activity though???
3. The second demijohn is nice and cloudy some evidence of clumps but nothing compared to the other it looks like normal fermentation.

Have I done something wrong or is my yeast being a a pig?

Is there any chance at all that one of the DJ's had something nasty in it? (Favourite is old yeast dried in the corners.) :?:

If so then it will manifest itself with the first taste so don't worry!

It's like the Trub and my yeast have combined it's just of that one is as expected and the other is relatively clear with scrambled egg in it... And not much krausen either

I'm thinking I might have over pitched and the yeast isn't multiplying as it normally would.

The downside to stove top mashing & boiling in a bag is that the protein deposits end up in the FV. I lose about 2L in a 12L AG wort. It takes about 2 weeks to compact down, but it won't overly affect the beer.

it cants be weird yeast I soaked the Demi's in oxy for 4hrs scrubbed and then re soaked in Oxy, and then scrubbed with dish soap, rinsed out sanitised and covered the top with clingfilm until I racked into them from my Post boil Filter/Volume adjustment bucket which had also had a similar treatment.

One Demijohn is cloudy with yeast you can see it swirling etc etc the other looks like I've dumped scrambled egg into it but it's also active just not what I would call "Normal"

Tis Nottingham yeast btw.

Post a photo. One probably has more as it was all lurking at the bottom of your pot when you transferred to dj. It's almost certainly break material which looks pretty much like you're describing.

Hard to be sure without photos but I imagine it's fine.

I've had grain and bits of hop get into a brew and its looks rather strange moving around in there. Like war of the world's tendrils.

No problems to date though.

It looks like this

Looks like a bit of grain covered in yeast. I'll take a pic of mine tomoz. Looks similar.

Shouldn't be any grain in there it's been through my sieve and a boiled muslin cloth followed by a mesh bag on the syphon granted it won't stop everything but no large particles should've got through.

My thoughts are

Break + Yeast = scrambled egg

On another note after taking the photo I watched the demijohn like a kid with their head in a washing machine door watching it do its thing... The mrs is now questioning my sanity.

watching beer, wine, cider fermenting is what I like to do too, the different things that go on over the days and colour changes are most magical, the missus gave up questioning my sanity years ago, she even joined me for10 mins last month but then said, "yeah I agree it is wonderfully fascinating, but not enough to watch for as long as you do" then went orf to watch the tell lie vision!

Oh how I know that feeling!! :thumb: :thumb:

I pitched the yeast into three DJ's of Grape & Mango wine about six weeks ago and for the first time ever I was still there when the yeast started to work.

One after the other I saw the dried yeast in the DJ's float, then fall to the bottom, then expand as they hydrated and then lifted like a carpet as they started to float bit-by-bit to the surface where they lost some bubbles and fell back down again.

Lava lamps are okay but these little beasties were making alcohol which made it much more fascinating! :thumb::thumb:

I've never told the wife why I was out there so long so she just thinks I have a mistress locked up in the garage!

Looks fine. Did you use any moss or clearing agents?

Yes I used a tiny chunk of a Protofloc its only a 5lt batch so I don't need a lot

On another note im really happy with the colour, I've always ended up too dark, although my Mash could've been more efficient I only managed OG 1.042 which is ok but I was after 1.044 - 1.046

I've had all sorts of fermentations, that looks fine to me, it's just yeast and break material as far as I know.

Close

Break + Fast = scrambled eggs

It does look a bit odd but I wouldn't be too concerned. Have a whiff of the airlock, see if it smells ok
