In the paper today ..they're bringing back Watneys party 7....but it s not going to taste like it used to it's going to be a "craft" pale ale...
"Oh,aye"...says I to the chap reading out loud today in the canteen..."what's craft about it..?"
"Well"...he says,"it'll be like that Hop house 13.."
FFSasad.

The original was truly rubbish beer, but kept many parties going :beer1:
I suppose it was the canned version of Red Barrel. Perhaps that too will be making a revival......

Anyway perhaps it will be the opportunity time to dig out one of these from the cutlery drawer (or for many on here your Mum's). The pointy end won't have been used for some time

Not only that but they want us to fund it - had an ad pop up in my FB feed a couple of days ago seeking crowd funding for this.

I've just read through the website and already want to go all Killing Eve and "chop the knob off" whoever wrote the copy for their beers. If they haven't got a knob I'll borrow one and stitch it on for them.

Whilst the main purpose for these things was indeed opening the legendary Party 7 ours had a secondary use. We often used to have evaporated milk poured over tinned fruit, jelly or something else for pud and the above device was used to pierce a pouring hole in the evaporated milk can as well as on on the opposite side to let the air in.

I met the Watney's people at CBR. They have quite carefully trod a line of humour with regard to the old brand, and trying to make good modern beer. If I'm remembering correctly they were contract or Cuckoo brewing but with a view to setting up their own brewhouse as soon as possible.
They were a decent, humorous bunch and had some quite decent beer. It struck me that they were taking a risky approach, but sometimes risk pays off. Best of luck to them! If they make decent beer then they deserve to succeed.

Watneys Party 7 and Red Barrel both come with a lot of baggage most of it bad especially if you are over 55. Personally I can't see the point in resurrecting a name that had a poor reputation. Far better to have new name to match a new product. Why take a risk that can so easily be avoided?
Conversely Tetleys Bitter, Boddingtons, John Smiths and Newcastle Brown have slowly deteriorated over the years and rely on names that were once associated with good beer.

poor reputation

I'm over 55 and remember well! the poor reputation is a generous term for Watneys. Their brewing methods were awful and the beer was too. The Watneys brand was in so little regard they took down signage from outside their pubs.

Candy primings were added at the end of primary fermentation. But, assuming the OG of the primings is 1150º, they add 7 gravity points, according to my calculations. What’s going on? Well, my guess is that all the other **** they mixed in at racking time is bringing down the OG. 667 barrels were brewed and a further 106 barrels of various types of ullage blended in. That’s around 14% of the total.

I’m guessing that the candy sugar raised the effective OG by six or seven points and the ullage brought it down by four. Watneys beers are so much fun. Not quite sure how you would replicate that on a homebrew scale.

Easy....don't brew it just buy 4 tins of Boddingtons, tip into a jug, leave til tomorrow, then drink.
Are you sure four cans is enough? I always counted on there being more than that left in the can when I was drinking them first thing in the morning.

Wastney's Red was knocked out at a whopping 3.9% while the party 4 / 7 was Estra Pale Ale at 3.5%. The very best was Star Light at 3.0%. I grew up with this shiite. there's no wonder I've turned out a bit funny.
