Hi all,as i live in france i cant get a water report,ive made 7 ag brews to date and everyone so far has turned out really good, all i do at the moment is add campden to the water,my question is do i need to do anything else or leave well alone, our water is quite hard and i think probably comtains quite a lot of calcium, as it leaves a chalky film on sides of hlt. : johnluc.

If you cant get a report just go with a ct should be ok

You could try the salifert alkalinty test kit, that'd tell you how hard the water is.

About all i do at the moment is the campden tablet thing to counter any chlorine or chloromines and and then adjust the total alkalinity of the brewing liquor - in theory if you get that right then the mash will end up being about the right PH.

For the latter I use the test kit mentioned above to measure what the water's total alkalinity is (it can change day to day if your water supplier has multiple sources) and then add the right amount of CRS (carbonate reducing solution) to adjust it - although you can use various salts instead, if you wish and are more knowledgeable than i am.

thanks for your replies guys, think i must get me a test kit i think amazon do them and will deliver to France.do any of the online hbs do them so i can order crs with it,delivery charges are killing me.

they probably eat more than they keep :shock: seriously very hard too find specialised stores like fish keeping, only big supermarkets or garden centres with very limited stocks.
